Sudhir Kakar, der bekannteste Psychoanalytiker Indiens, untersucht ein Phänomen, das lange Zeit in der Psychoanalyse vernachlässigt wurde: das Zusammenspiel von Psyche und Geist. Er betrachtet dieses Zusammenspiel in unterschiedlichen Kontexten: durch Heilung emotionaler Störungen, in religiösen Ritualen und in den Leben von drei bekannten spirituellen Meistern - dem im 16. Jahrhundert lebenden tibetisch-buddhistischen Drukpa Kunley, dem indischen Guru Bhagwan oder Osho und Mahatma Gandhi.
Religion und Spiritualität waren zwar immer schon ein Thema der Psychologie, aber das rationalistische Verständnis des Menschen ließ wenig Spielraum für eine ernsthafte Beschäftigung mit "höheren" Mächten. Heute kann man offen zugeben, daß das Leben auch Sinnsuche ist, und die Psychologie erkennt spirituelle Potentiale der Psyche durchaus an. Wie kann man das Verhältnis von "romantischen" und "rationalistischen" Bedürfnissen beschreiben? Was bedeutet die Suche nach Authentizität? Sudhir Kakar beginnt seine Erkundung in Poona mit der Geschichte des Begründers des "spiritualistischen Marktes" Rajneesh, später Bhagwan oder Osho genannt. Worin lag seine unglaubliche Anziehungskraft vor allem für Teile der westlichen Eliten? Welche Rolle spielten Narzissmus und Egozentrismus in seiner Lehre? Und wie sieht es mit der praktischen Spiritualität eines Mahatma Gandhi aus, die sich weniger in Meditation und Kontemplation als vielmehr in einer alltagspraktischen Aufmerksamkeit äußerte? Worin unterscheiden sich diese "Gurus" und ihre Lehren von der westlichen Auffassung von "den Alltag hinter sich lassen und an einer anderen, erlösenden Welt partizipieren"? Sudhir Kakar stellt die unterschiedlichen Zugangsweisen nicht gegeneinander, sondern beschreibt ihre Intentionen und den Weg, wie sie sich ergänzen und bereichern. Tatsächlich ist so ein Buch über die Versöhnung von Geist und Psyche entstanden.

A familiar story, just with…..less.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
