Trotz des Verbots war die Nachfrage gro, daher wurde schwarz gebrannter bzw. destillierter Gin angeboten. Das Symbol war eine schwarze hlzerne Katze, der Oldtomcat. Eine Besonderheit des Gins war, dass er zum Teil nicht sehr geniebar war, daher wurde Zucker beigemischt, um einen slichen Abgang zu garantieren.

Der Old Tom Gin entstand während der Prohibitionszeit in Großbritannien. Damals war es verboten, Alkohol zu brennen und zu verkaufen.
