Men en iskall januarinatt skakas den paradisiska tillvaron av en brand som ödelägger två sjöbodar. Den ena är Augusts och den andra ägs av Axel Ehnbom, en äldre man som bott på Hovenäset i hela sitt liv. Kriminalinspektören Maria Martinsson sliter med utredningen som snabbt utvidgas till att även omfatta ett mord. Någon på Hovenäset ruvar på riktigt mörka hemligheter. Samtidigt närmar sig faran från ett helt annat håll. Snart går varken Maria eller August säker
