يعد كتاب الإتقان في علوم القرآن واحد من أهمّ المراجع وأقدمها التي كتبت في البحث في علوم القرآن، استهلّ كاتبه مقدمة الكتاب في الحديث عن فضل القرآن وعظمته، ومن استغرابه من عدم كتابة الذين سبقوه من العلماء في علوم القرآن،وهذا الكتاب واحد من أهمّ المراجع التي يُرجع إليها فيفهم القرآن، فقد جمع فيه السيوطي علوم القرآن، ثمّ نقلَ أقوال من سبقوه من العلماء في الأبواب الخاصة بكلّ علم، وهو في كلّ باب يذكر الكتب المصنفة فيه، ويورد آراء العلماء وأقوالهم في موطنها المناسب، فتميّز هذا الكتاب بالشمول والاستيعاب، حيث اعتنى الإمام السيوطي في تنقيح الكتاب وتهذيبه ثم جعله مقدمة لتفسيره الذي كتبه وهو مجمع البحرين ومطلع البدرين. اشتمل كتاب الإتقان في علوم القرآن على عدد من المباحث منها:أسباب النزول، ومواطن النزول، والوقائع والأحداث المتعلقة بنزول الآيات، وروايات القرآن وأسانيدها، والقراءات، وأحكام التجويد، وألفاظ القرآن، والناسخ والمنسوخ، والمجمل والمفصّل، وأحكام القرآن، وغيرها من الأبواب، وهو في كلّ باب يمثّل بآيات ويعدد الشروط.
