This set of two seals includes lobster and an inscription that reads: “I could just dip you in butter.” At first glance, it’s playful—but like all good symbols, there’s more beneath the surface.

The phrase first came to me on my Grand Tour, when a man—half teasing, half earnest—told a sunburned woman she was his little lobster and that he could just dip her in butter. I’ve loved the absurd tenderness of it ever since. It became a phrase I used with those closest to me: my sister, my dearest friends. A shorthand for that rare and fierce fondness we sometimes feel—the kind that makes you want to keep someone forever, maybe even eat them up a little.

Lobsters, as legend has it, mate for life. So to be someone’s lobster is to be chosen. Not just in romance, but in the deep kinship of kindred souls.
