THE STORY
This beautiful mug design is reproduced from Jane's black and neon orange Biro drawing Butterfly Lover. Part of her print and fine china collection In Homage to the Last Great Carnivores of Eurasia, this body of work highlights threatened and endangered carnivores across the Eurasian continent.
Inspired by the old Chinese legend Butterfly Lovers this stunning design pays homage to the South China tiger, thought to be extinct in the wild. Wrapped round the mug exterior is a beautiful male tiger lying in the grass, playing with butterflies. Featured on the back of the mug is a large orange butterfly layered with the image of a tigress. The interior features a fluttering butterfly inspired by the character Zhu Yintai from 'Butterfly Lovers'. There are also references to the 'Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto' 1959 by He Zhangao and Chen Gang as well as the film '2046' 2005 by Wong Kar-Wai.
Butterfly Lover original drawing also illustrates The Legend of the Last South China Tiger. The tale and accompanying drawings were created by Jane for Save Wild Tigers organisation, to symbolise the plight of the South China tiger. The original drawing was auctioned in London in 2014 to raise funds for SWT vital work conserving the last remaining wild tigers.

Because, together, our voices must be heard in the call for fundamental changes to international law to protect the tiger.
