Don’t let your ice cream melt while you’re counting somebody else’s sprinkles.

Now, it’s a well-known fact I LOVE ice cream, barely noticing incidental toppings in my eagerness to tuck into its creamy, silken wonderfulness. However this is a sentiment (and well-known meme) I can relate to, at least in part. While many of us, young and old, develop repetitive habits that can be interpreted as obsessive, it is when unwanted reoccurring thoughts, fears and sensations (obsessions) dominate actions and compel repetitive behaviours (compulsions) that the illness, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) becomes apparent. It’s this obsessive desire to reduce or alleviate the fear of a consequence occurring that many can relate to, myself included. Fear can spark many things…even story lines….

Sometimes picture book ideas spring up out of nowhere. I can’t recall exactly where Oswald’s story came from or why the urge to tell it hammered at me so strongly , but once he slipped into my life, he was determined to stay and be heard. Oswald Constantine Dorian Messweather’s tale first bubbled to life during a flight from Brisbane to Singapore. In just under eight hours, Ozzie as he affectionately became known to me, invited me into his precise and anxious world. I knew I had to treat him gently yet couldn’t wait to share his tale of overcoming, or rather managing, OCD with the world. This is his story.

Mess and disorder upset Oswald. Even the complexity of his own name is enough to set Oswald’s legs jiggling and his palms itching with anxiety. To combat his unease, Oswald obsessively counts his take-everywhere pocket pals – his crayons. It is a compulsion he finds comforting but also extremely exhausting.

Oswald’s obsessive preoccupations distract him from everything and everyone else around him, until one day Oswald is encouraged to use his penchant for perfection and eye for detail in a class project. With the help of his crayons, Oswald’s classmates create something spectacular, which helps Oswald realise just how valuable he is in spite of his anxieties.

Oswald is not a picture book that focuses intently on the educational perspectives of children with OCD but rather more on the emotional aspects associated with this debilitating condition. Oswald is caught in the grips of needing to be in control of the messier aspects of his life and like many young children suffering from obsessive worrying and anxieties, wants to stop but can’t. By allowing Oswald to take control of his anxieties and employ them with purpose, Oswald gains room to breathe and an awareness that they need not govern him.

Siobhan McVey evocative stylised illustrations help reinforce as well as soften the prose which is occasionally metaphoric and curt. Ribbons and swirls of colour speak for Oswald, depicting the intensity of his emotions through their form and complexity and deliver a sense of hope and enlightenment.

Unhealthy reoccurring anxious thoughts can inhibit daily functioning in the most corrosive ways. Nearly 3 per cent of Australians experience OCD with children as young as six displaying symptoms. Causes and triggers are many and varied however, this picture book endeavours to create a timely and gentle medium, which parents and carers can share with young children to encourage deeper discussion and promote emotional and mental healing in a non-instructive way.

The really work!
Bought these or a friend with severely dry cracked feet. The change was significant and immediate. They wore them around the house for a day and that night they could already feel the difference.

Fabulously bizarre and effective
These silicone socks have to be the strangest item I have ever ordered from Amazon. However strange they are, I was pleasantly surprised with them. My order came with two pairs, and I took one pair out to wash before use. I laughed at handling them then because they were a cross between hospital socks and leftover mannequin skin…trippy. The socks dried fast, so I put on foot lotion and put the socks on. The socks are beige skin tones that cover the entire foot up to the ankle, basically booties. The silicone is very soft and makes putting on and taking off the socks easy. They are also surprisingly easy to walk around in because the bottoms have grips, again, like hospital socks. I walked on tile, hardwood, and carpet with no slipping. The booties also stayed in place with no issues. I was concerned my feet would sweat, but that didn't happen. I was able to wear them for 3 hours without sweaty feet. When I took them off, my feet were a lot more soft than before or if I had used regular socks. For reference, my feet are not terrible, but the skin around my toes is dry and peeling from my picking(gross, I know). The socks I got are a size large, which worried me because they are big, but the site said for my shoe size (9) that's what I should order, and they were right. They are the perfect size and stretchy for room. I can't believe how cool and well-thought-out these socks are, on top of working. Honestly, these are among the top 20 favorite items I've ordered from Amazon. They may look incredibly strange, and they are, but they work wonders.

Absolute game changer for chronically dry feet/cracked heels
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
I had recently bought a pair of silicone heel/ankle wraps to fill out my boot a little since I noticed my heels were lifting when I was skating. I tested them out around the house and noticed they left my heels softer while the rest of my sockless feet got quite dry. So I got these full foot silicone socks to see the effect of having my whole foot covered. I slather the entirety of my feet with Dr. Scholl's Severe Cracked Heel Restoring Balm (love how convenient it is to apply it to my feet with the solid stick form) and then slip them into these silicone socks. After just a couple hours, when I pull out my feet they're (a teeny bit sweaty at first), but then overall soft and smooth and have absorbed the balm fully leaving barely any residue in the silicone sock. I find these silicone socks generally comfortable; I wear them in the evenings while relaxing on the couch, take them off after a couple hours and let my feet breathe a bit, and then reapply my balm and socks and wear them to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, which I almost always do (not because of the socks), I'll take the socks off and allow my feet to breathe again. I wear a woman's size 6 shoe and the small size is pretty comfortable. However, I made the mistake of wearing them while being on my feet for a couple hours straight during household chores -- they must've somehow cut off my circulation a bit with the standing, so I wouldn't recommend wearing these silicone socks while being active. And since they're not exactly my foot size, they slide around sometimes and will start to feel tight at my big toe. But if that happens, I just tug on the toe area of the sock to give my big toe more wiggle room and problem solved. Prior to wearing these socks, I was soaking and doing heavy duty exfoliation of my feet every week. These socks seem like they'll work to help me extend the time between soakings and exfoliations. The 5 pack is a great value. So far none have torn, so they seem rather durable. Not sure what I could even do to tear a hole in these.
