Orthodox icon of Saint Ammon, Ammoun the Hermit of the Nitria desert.

Commemorated: December 7th

Saint Ammon was a great ascetic of the fifth century. He was the abbot of the Tabennesiote Monastery in Upper Egypt. He was one of the most venerated ascetics of the Nitrian Desert, and Saint Athanasius mentions him in his life of Saint Anthony.

Saint Ammon, the founder of the celebrated settlement of coenobites and hermits on and near Mons Nitria,  he is often styled the “father of Egyptian monasticism.” He was contemporary with St. Anthony, and filled the same place in Lower Egypt as Anthony in the Thebaid. Being left an orphan by his parents, wealthy people near Alexandria, he was forced by his uncle to marry. But on the wedding day he persuaded his bride to take a vow of celibacy, and for eighteen years they lived together as brother and sister: afterwards with her consent he withdrew to Nitria, and from that time only visited his wife twice a year (Pall. Hist. Laus. 8). A great multitude of zealous disciples soon gathered round him; so that Palladius not many years later found about five thousand monks, some living quite alone, some with one or more companions; while six hundred “advanced in holiness” dwelt apart from the rest in more complete isolation. Several miracles are related of Ammon

Fun read
Format: Paperback
My son says he doesnt enjoy reading but once he gets going he quickly gets pulled in. He said he'd seen the Epic books at school and he typically liked them, so we gave it a try. He read it in about 2 days, its summer so its amazing he read to begin with, but in asking him, he said it was a good story and it was easy to read. Honestly I like my kids to have books that are easy to read but will throw in the occasional big word as a learning opportunity. The book quality itself is really nice. From cover to cover the book is well made and feels durable. The illustrations are bright and well done. Overall I would highly recommend this to any child who might enjoy time travel with a touch of history.

A fun, comic style book
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
My fourth grader really enjoyed this book and asked if it was a part of a series. We didn't sit down and read it in one setting and usually when that happens we forget to come back and finish a book..... But she didn't forget about this one. Will probably reread it in the future too. The pages are nice quality and the colors are bright. The print is a little bit on the teeny side; But that's pretty typical in comic style print. We were really happy with it! I think a kid as young as second or third grade could also enjoy this book if they are reading skills are a little on the stronger side. I've sat with 5th graders who would read it this level too.

Fun read
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Kids had fun reading this book. My 7 year old thought it was lot of fun. My 11 year old thought the story had few holes where people and events were happening without any explanation. But overall, both had fun reading it. The book is made really well - it's beautifully illustrated and printed well. The behind-the-scene look at the how the characters were drawn was really neat as well.
