On Elephantine, Maurice Louca's new album released exclusively on Sub Rosa on vinyl LP, the Cairo-based musician guides a 12-piece ensemble through a 38-minute masterwork that might best be described as panoramic. Elements of free improvisation, Sun Ra's cosmic jazz, gorgeous Arabic melody, trancelike African and Yemeni music, and minimalism meet in his wholly unique compositional vision. Louca has in recent years garnered a global reputation through two previous solo albums and an expanding, evolving lineup of genre-defying collaborations. The Wire called his 2014 sophomore solo effort, Benhayyi Al-Baghbaghan (Salute the Parrot) (NAWA 002CD/LP/X-LP, 2014), "remarkable music-dense, driven and splashed with colour." In 2017, Lekhfa (MST 003CD/MST 4001LP), the debut by the trio of Louca and vocalists Maryam Saleh and Tamer Abu Ghazaleh, was praised as an "edgy triumph" by the Guardian. For Louca, 36, Elephantine serves as both the pinnacle of his wide-ranging experience and a bold next step in his development as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. "There was a blessed thing about the process of making this record," Louca says of the sessions, held in Stockholm. "The dynamic between us musically but also as people... What these musicians delivered was really more than I could ask for, Everyone played their hearts out on this record." The music-from it's pensive lulls through it's stretches of hard-grooving hypnosis and moments of avant-jazz catharsis-testifies to that rapport. Best absorbed as a continuous performance, Elephantine's six individually named tracks nonetheless present striking self-contained landscapes. "The Leper" entrances through a deft use of repetition that Louca gleaned from cosmic jazz, African and Yemeni music, and other transcendental modal traditions. "Laika" manages to evoke the minimalists, though on the combustible terms of '60s and '70s free jazz; "One More for the Gutter", on which Louca ingeniously pits one half of his ensemble against the other, albeit in a synergistic way, mines similarly fiery terrain. "The Palm of a Ghost" distills the band to a Cairo-rooted core, featuring stirring spontaneous melodies from oud player Natik Awayez, violinist Ayman Asfour, and vocalist Nadah El Shazly. The album's title track follows, and it too blurs the border between composition and improvisation with gorgeously atmospheric results. Lightweight Night Hydration That Works

This Is That ‘Boring’ Skincare That Quietly Works So Well

I’ve tried a lot of moisturizers over the years, and this falls into what people call “boring skincare” — and honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well.
If you have acne-prone skin and deal with redness or irritation, this is one of those rare products that checks both boxes without overcomplicating things.
The consistency is lightweight but still hydrating. It spreads easily and absorbs quickly into the skin without leaving any greasy or heavy residue. It gives my skin the hydration it needs without clogging pores or triggering breakouts. I’ve had no issues with acne while using this, which is not something I can say for most moisturizers.
It also has Very minimal to no fragrance, which I prefer — especially great for sensitive or reactive skin.
Overall:
This isn’t a “flashy” product, but it’s consistent, gentle, and effective. It’s the kind of moisturizer you can rely on daily without worrying about irritation or breakouts.

In the past I have used high end skincare products and wasted money. This is absolutely one of the best PM OIL-FREE facial moisturizers. This has helped my skin improve significantly over the last few months. Its super super light weight and pea size dots cover my entire face. I add a pea size to my cheeks, forehead and chin. It all soaks into my pores evenly without clogging them. Due to me using a serum by CeraVe as well.
(Very important part of my personal skin-care routine)
I have extremely sensitive skin and nearly break out with everything I use.
However this helps being fragrance-free & OIL-FREE!
Over the years I always thought high end brands were better than the lower cost friendly ones. (NOT THE CASE! At least for me.)
I highly recommend this product for someone who is starting out using facial products or someone who has indulged in high end.
This does WORK! And it leaves my skin feeling fresh and lightweight. I started seeing differences in my skin texture (for the good) within about a month after using it daily. I then backed off from it and use it every other day. Since I now have my skin where I need it to be.

Affordable and Effective

This is a great everyday moisturizer for before bedtime. It is a bit heavier than some moisturizers, but I personally like that at night. My skin seems to drink it up as I sleep and in the morning I wake up without any puffiness to my face. I look refreshed and it never feels greasy or sticky. Best part is the price. It is so affordable.
