Are colleges and universities in a period of unprecedented disruption? Is a bachelor's degree still worth the investment? Are the humanities coming to an end? What, exactly, is higher education good for?

In For the Common Good, Charles Dorn challenges the rhetoric of America's so-called crisis in higher education by investigating two centuries of college and university history. From the community college to the elite research university--in states from California to Maine--Dorn engages a fundamental question confronted by higher education institutions ever since the nation's founding: Do colleges and universities contribute to the common good?

Tracking changes in the prevailing social ethos between the late eighteenth and early twenty-first centuries, Dorn illustrates the ways in which civic-mindedness, practicality, commercialism, and affluence influenced higher education's dedication to the public good. Each ethos, long a part of American history and tradition, came to predominate over the others during one of the four chronological periods examined in the book, informing the character of institutional debates and telling the definitive story of its time. For the Common Good demonstrates how two hundred years of political, economic, and social change prompted transformation among colleges and universities--including the establishment of entirely new kinds of institutions--and refashioned higher education in the United States over time in essential and often vibrant ways.

Black & Decker coffee pot
Color: Black, Style: coffeemaker
Good coffee pot lasts a long time still going today only downfall which you wouldn't get the five stars is the protective cover on the heat plate scrapes off too soon by putting the pot in and out.

Simple, Basic and NOT expensive
Color: Black, Style: coffeemaker
Not Fancy, Not Complicated, Not Expensive. What else do you need in the morning. Replaced the same model with a new one as my old one broke after more than 15 years of faithful service. Takes 11 minutes to brew 8 cups of coffee, which BTW is really only 3.5 cups of coffee in a real mug. Yes, you can set it to start automatically in the morning. Thank goodness for Amazon same day delivery or there would have been chaos the next morning.

Good value. Decent coffee maker.
Color: Black, Style: coffeemaker
This is a decent pretty basic coffee maker. Nothing fancy but it’s programmable and has sneak a cup. That’s all I really care about. I was concerned after reading some reviews about the coffee tasting plastic and leaking. I’m glad that I have not experienced these issues. I bought this because all of the $70-$100 coffee makers I’ve bought die after a year or two anyway. So far so good.

It’s fine, very basic- light during brewing doesn’t work, but it still brews a good cup!
Color: Black, Style: coffeemaker
Sadly I accidentally dropped my coffee pot into my sink trying to wash it and it shattered the entire bottom, so I just bought a similar one, same brand. It works fine, but it doesn’t work as the instructions say. Supposedly when you push the clock button to brew it will give you a green light on the left upper side, and when it’s done brewing it will have a red logo on the bottom right side. I cannot get it to give me the green light for brewing, but if I just hold the clock button down, I’ll hear it stat to gurgle and then it brews. So that part is definitely (at least on mine) not functioning properly, but I don’t care enough to return it and be without coffee another morning, and B&D is always a decent brand. I have a $2800k fancy espresso/latte/cappuccino maker that grinds fresh beans and I use the plain old coffee pot way more because I drink too much coffee to make cup after cup, I want the whole carafe. Besides that one faulty light, it works like any other $35 coffee pot, no frills, and it gets the job done.
