Description

When Baseball Went White: Reconstruction, Reconciliation, and Dreams of a National PastimeThe story of Jackie Robinson valiantly breaking baseball's color barrier in 1947 is one that most Americans know. But less recognized is the fact that some seventy years earlier, following the Civil War, baseball was tenuously biracial and had the potential for a truly open game. How, then, did the game become so firmly segregated that it required a trailblazer like Robinson? The answer, Ryan A. Swanson suggests, has everything to do with the politics

The story of Jackie Robinson valiantly breaking baseball's color barrier in 1947 is one that most Americans know. But less recognized is the fact that some seventy years earlier, following the Civil War, baseball was tenuously biracial and had the potential for a truly open game. How, then, did the game become so firmly segregated that it required a trailblazer like Robinson? The answer, Ryan A. Swanson suggests, has everything to do with the politics of "reconciliation" and a wish to avoid the issues of race that an integrated game necessarily raised.
The history of baseball during Reconstruction, as Swanson tells it, is a story of lost opportunities. Thomas Fitzgerald and Octavius Catto (a Philadelphia baseball tandem), for example, were poised to emerge as pioneers of integration in the 1860s. Instead, the desire to create a "national game"--professional and appealing to white Northerners and Southerners alike--trumped any movement toward civil rights. Focusing on Philadelphia, Washington DC, and Richmond--three cities with large African American populations and thriving baseball clubs--Swanson uncovers the origins of baseball's segregation and the mechanics of its implementation. An important piece of sports history, his work also offers a better understanding of Reconstruction, race, and segregation in America.

Didn’t get a review on the garlic powder
Style: Zinnia Dahlia
The seeds were okay but the garlic powder that I ordered was smaller than usual is a case of bait and switch

Beautiful and vibrant blooms
Style: Zinnia Dahlia, Style: Zinnia Dahlia
This is the first time we planted Zinnias in our garden. Seemed so easy and worry free. It took 2.5 months from the time we planted the seeds to seeing the first blooms. It's now been about 3 months and the plants are in full bloom. The flowers came out in many vibrant colors! The seed packets contained a nice surprise since you don't know exactly what colors the flowers will be. Looks like it will continue blooming for a few more months with a little caring, like constant watering and deadheading. We definitely plan to capture the seeds so we can enjoy the flowers again.

I love my zinnia flowers!!! I had nearly 100% of these seeds sprout right up!!! (I plant a lot of seeds, and that's not very common)! I can't wait for these beauties to grow, so far they're looking healthy

Levoit is Greatness
Color: White, Size: 42 inches Wifi
I was in the market for another higher level oscillating floor fan and the following outlines why I purchased the Levoit Smart 42 inch Tower Fan. Performance: The air volume, speed and reach is fantastic for this price level. It is not quite as powerful as my Vornado OZI42DC, but this Levoit far exceeds the needs of my living room and it is quieter than the Vornado. Features: Energy efficient is a plus. It also includes a full featured remote control, but I was very pleased that included WIFI and VeSync smart phone app integration. Easy, one app control for my Levoit fan and Levoit air purifier. This fan has 12 speeds and 4 modes of operation providing considerable flexibility. I really like the Auto mode speed option that utilizes room temperature (built in thermostat) to determine variable air flow. In addition this fan has an easily removable back plate for cleaning the unit to ensure long term optimal performance. Design: This fan is a permanent fixture in my living room so appearance is an important aspect to me. The Levoit is visually elegant in comparison to similarly priced offerings. It looks like a high quality fixture in the room. Nothing cheap or industrial looking here. I also appreciate that I can turn on or off the visual display on the front of the unit. Overall: I am extremely happy with this purchase. It checks all the boxes I desired in a high quality oscillating floor fan. Levoit will be my go to brand for any future purchases.
