Named well before the shit-showery of 2020, the title has taken on all new meaning at the end of the longest year of our lives. Recorded at Portland’s Stop / Start and Haywire Studios in the fall of 2019, SO LONG winds through a labyrinth of 90s grunge dinosaurs, washed-out shoegazers, Amrep noise rockings and angular post-hardcore heavily indebted to the legacy of Gravity Records and a little ol’ band from SD. Calling it psychedelic might seem odd had you not heard the waves of feedback, delayed and heavily affected guitars and shifting song dynamics that turn the listener over and over like a giant rock tumbler, eventually smoothing the roughest edges. Dealing with loss, sadness, confusion and alienation, the album's emotional resonance will stick with readers and it's sometimes obtuse lyricism leaves room for personal interpretations. The record is as much looming and desperate as it is embracing the power of a positive mental attitude to see things through. A big chorus never hurts either.
SO LONG cuts a wide swath through modernity into uniquely familiar sonic territory, a vaccine to soothe and savage already psychically strained audiences roiling from the last 9 months of lockdown and national political tempest.

Satyajit Ray's Great Trilogy Masterpiece Gets the Criterion Treatment In Blu Ray!
Years before trilogies were in vogue, way before "The Godfather" there was "The Apu Trilogy". The original negatives were lost in a fire and yet Criterion has managed to work miracles with this masterful restoration of this beautiful classic tale of the life of a Bengalese child to adulthood over 3 films. The story is compelling and absorbing and directed as only a master like Satyajit Ray can. Any attempt to further describe this movie would just not do justice to it; it has to be experienced and rewards repeated viewing. This release also includes a 48-page booklet of essays on the film in addition to the 3 blu ray discs of the films. Great sound and picture quality is evident as well considering the film's age and source master.
This worthy addition to any art-film buff's video library comes highly recommended!

What is the point? (SPOILER)
My heading echoes the adult Apu who, in the last movie in the trilogy says, "What is the use?" and allows the pages of his autobiographical novel to blow away in a wind.
In the first two movies we enter the very real life of a rural Indian family whose members are all lovingly created by director and actors. But their story is rather sad. First Apu's young sister dies of illness, a fate shared much later by their father. Then the life of the mother dwindles away and Apu is left alone. The restoration of the nearly-destroyed films is a technological marvel, but I wondered if this tale would attain to anything of lasting value by the end.
With the third and last movie in this series, I can reach a somewhat different conclusion. There is death and suffering in this last part too as Apu's wife dies early on but the entire narrative reaches a sudden and surprising resolution when Apu unites with his long-abandoned little boy who is himself a mirror of Apu growing up. There is something of a vacuous Asian experience in this cinematic telling but it doesn't really come to nothing as the stereotype might suggest. I recall that experience in David Lean's rendering of E.M.Forster's A Passage to India, a wonderful movie too but, like the novel, lending itself to earlier Western ideas about the East. An element of life, freedom, joy bursts upon us at the end of Ray's movie and transforms everything we have seen before. Yes, life is risky, unpredictable, filled with suffering, but it can still lead to something wonderful.

Masterpieces of Indian cinema
A memorable trilogy by Indian master filmmaker, Satyajit Ray. My personal favourite of the three is the first one, Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road). It is a moving and extraordinary portrait of rural poverty in India, focused on the trials and tribulations of a struggling family. This trilogy is a must for the collections all lovers of world cinema.

Custom Mailer
Excellent item as you probably know . I'm THRILLED about the shipping all around & fast delivery to porch but I would like to compliment whomever is responsible for custom cardboard mailer it came in. I worried reading some of the major complaints from recent years about packaging issues and damages suffered to box & DVD's . It would appear that the manufacturers corrected this issue. I'm very happy with our distribution outlet in El Paso , Texas . I'm west 90 miles from in New Mexico and I think they terrific and professional. Not one order came damaged , late or poorly packaged so Thank You all responsible parties. Oh yeah , the ''Essential Fellini'' anthology ( minus a few films not added and missing correct documentary Ive seen about the director ) is your final replacement !
