Southampton’s Holy Rood Housing Estate covers a wide area east of the old town. Built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it replaced a mixture of crumbling Victorian terraces, tenements and courts that at one time formed the town’s most densely populated district. Affluence and poverty mingled side by side until it was all swept away by slum clearances, bombs and modernisation. Local historian Dave Marden looks back on what was there.

Author biography

Born in Southampton and growing up there in the postwar years, Dave’s working-class roots gave him an appreciation of life’s values. Apart from a few childhood years spent in north London, he has lived all his life in his hometown, watching it recover from the devastation of the blitz and then seeing many of his old neighbourhoods swept away in the name of progress with families, having grown up together for generations, uprooted and re-housed on new estates, far out on the alien fringes of the town.

His previous titles for JMD cover several areas of Southampton that include Chapel, Kingsland and St Marys whose old streets are now just memories of those that witnessed them

Provides privacy without being stanoffish
Color: Steel, Color: Steel
Its a perfect way to get a lil bit of privacy, its the color steel. Its a little darker than the picture but it works. Free standing doesn't attach to furniture and takes maybe 10 mins to put together. It's about 5 feet tall. Very lightweight cover slides over the steel frame and zips st the bottom.

Perfect for my office space!!
It's a well packaged item including a simple tool set and a clear instruction. I put it together just by myself in about 15-20 minutes without any problems. The base is solid pieces of metal, and it stands very sturdy. It's also light enough for me to move it around in my office to serve different purposes. I like the color and the quality of the fabric. It blends in with my office space perfectly. I needed it as a partition between my desk and the door, and the background for my video conference call. Surprisingly, it can also deflect the air coming down from the AC vent behind my desk. I didn't expect it to 100% soundproofing (not its purpose), but I feel it did absorb some humming sound from my mini fridge behind my desk. I would recommend this to my colleague.

Perfect for my company's temporary needs
Color: Gray, Size: 72" wide, 66" Tall
My company ordered multiples of these dividers to separate desks in much smaller temporary space we had to use after our offices were flooded in August 2023. (Yeah, I know - just getting around to reviewing them now!) These fit the bill perfectly. Granted a bit of privacy so we weren't staring at the employee next to us. Easy to put together; excellent value.
