Embrace the coastal lifestyle and register your support for the preservation of unique and precious marine environments with Okihasi’s Barrier Island Men’s Coastal Shirt. Barrier islands, which emerge from waters including the Gulf, would seem to be part of an intelligent design that made provision for storm buffers. This shirt is easy to care for and is crafted from lightweight, breathable material.

The artist Walter Anderson made numerous trips to Horn Island, rowing eight miles across Mississippi Sound in a tiny boat to reach the barrier island. In 1965, he was lucky to survive his last trip to his favorite retreat, which at one time hosted a cattle farm and was now down to a single cow. “Nine days into his stay,” wrote Boyce Apholt in “The Many Voyages of Walter Anderson,” an article that appeared in The Bitter Southerner magazine, “Anderson woke to fierce winds. There was no rain, but the tide was rising — fast.” Wind and rain soon came and were “given a name: Betsy, the first hurricane in U.S. history to wreak a billion dollars in damage.” Anderson, huddled beneath his overturned boat, made it through a stormy evening, awakening to what he said looked like the “remains of an all-night debauch.” (The cow did not.) One need not go to Anderson’s extremes to appreciate the role and value of barrier islands, which develop over time as a result of winds, waves and currents. Parallel to the shore, they protect the mainland from heavy surf and hurricane-driven storm surges. In Florida, they include Shell Island, St. George Island and Perdido Key. Given their relative seclusion, they are ideal nesting sites for shorebirds and sea turtles. - Steve Bornhoft

More about the Barrier Island Ecosystem

Barrier islands are sandy islands that develop over time from the movement of sand and other sediment from wave action and other ocean forces. These islands form parallel to the mainland shoreline and create a protective barrier along the coast against strong storms, like hurricanes.

Barrier islands also provide critical nesting grounds for many migratory birds and different sea turtle species, like the endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle. It is also an important ecosystem for Snowy Plovers and the Red Knot. You will also frequently find brown pelicans and different species of laughing gulls on these islands. Just offshore, you can also find bottlenose dolphins and the Great Hammerhead shark.

These ecosystems have been greatly reduced by development and will be reduced even more in the future by sea level rise from ocean thermal expansion and the melting of land-based glaciers.

The best biltong
I had to write a review because this biltong is actually incredible. It’s the best biltong I’ve ever had. The bags contain large, tender pieces. The fat-to-protein ratio is perfect, and the seasoning is delicious. They even provide a paper bag to keep it fresh, and you can freeze anything you can’t eat within three days. I highly recommend this brand. I won’t be buying any other biltong after this.

Excellent flavor, tenderness, texture and quality
Wow, blown away by the excellent flavor, tenderness, texture and quality. I have never eaten Biltong before but it came up in Chatgpt when I asked about a great protein source to carry in my motorcycle tank bag that tastes better and has less UPFs and sugar than most beef jerky. The answer it gave me was Biltong. I gave this a try and love it.

Very moist jerky
I like this style of jerky because it’s natural and I like the fat that is in it. I have purchased other brands that I like better than this brand. The taste is good, good quality and the product is very fresh. My only issue is I like dry jerky and feel the moisture content is way too high in this product for me. If you like moist jerky, than this is for you. If you like shoe leather jerky keep searching.

Best biltong tasted to date
Biltong depot produces the best biltong I have tasted to date . I was ordering the 8oz slabs till now but I am going to order these instead . Same taste but the convenience is that it’s already been thinly sliced . The only thing I could say is a negative is it has too much sodium which could be reduced.

Actual biltong that is not dried to the point of being jerky
If you are like me, you have ordered biltong as slabs and pre-sliced slabs from a bunch of companies promising the real deal. Too many of those companies trim the fat or dry things out so much that it might as well be American beef jerky with coriander added to the spice blend. This just arrived and we opened the bag not expecting anything different honestly. I am sitting here eating it and logging on to write a review because this is finally the real deal. I wouldn't say that it is wet, but it isn't American jerky level dry either and there is good fat on the pieces. It's pricey, and there was a dry piece or two and a bit of fat that hadn't been properly flavored, but it is the next best thing to a freshly sliced wet and fat slab. If you can afford this treat, don't waste your money on the less expensive stuff -this is what you are missing.
