Avian Osteology by B. Miles Gilbert, Larry D. Martin, and Howard G. Savage has been an essential resource for North American zooarchaeologists since its introduction in the early 1970s.

At the time of initial publication, avian taxonomy relied heavily on morphological observations, but advances in DNA analyses have revolutionized our understanding of taxonomic relationships. Consequently, avian taxonomy has changed considerably since the first publication. This new edition features updated taxonomy consistent with the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) and the American OrnithologistsÕ Union (AOU)/American Ornithological Society (AOS) North American checklists.

In addition to the taxonomic updates, this edition features color plates of select species and elements. We have also corrected typographical errors, standardized terminology, and clarified information in the keys to individual elements.
