It was designed by architect Henry Bacon and constructed between 1914 and 1922. The building is constructed primarily of white marble. The Lincoln Memorial is dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln, who served as the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865. He is remembered for leading the nation through the Civil War and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery.
