It features a constant f/4 maximum aperture, ensuring stable exposure across the zoom range. The optical construction includes 17 elements in 12 groups, incorporating four aspherical elements to minimize distortion and maintain edge-to-edge sharpness. A Super Spectra coating reduces flare and ghosting.
The lens is equipped with a ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) for fast, precise autofocus with full-time manual override. The integrated Image Stabilizer (IS) provides up to 4 stops of compensation, enhancing handheld performance. Its rounded 10-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth background rendering. Built to L-series standards, it features weather sealing and a robust construction, with a 77mm filter thread and a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m.
