From the author of the acclaimed The Dry Grass of August comes a richly researched yet lyrical Southern-set novel that explores the conflicts of gentrification--a moving story of loss, love, and resilience. In 1961 Charlotte, North Carolina, the predominantly black neighborhood of Brooklyn is a bustling city within a city. Self-contained and vibrant, it has its own restaurants, schools, theaters, churches, and night clubs. There are shotgun shacks and poverty, along with well-maintained houses like the one Loraylee Hawkins shares with her young son, Hawk, her Uncle Ray, and her grandmother, Bibi. Loraylee's love for Archibald Griffin, Hawk's white father and manager of the cafeteria where she works, must be kept secret in the segregated South. Loraylee has heard rumors that the city plans to bulldoze her neighborhood, claiming it's dilapidated and dangerous. The government promises to provide new housing and relocate businesses. But locals like Pastor Ebenezer Polk, who's facing the demolition of his church, know the value of Brooklyn does not lie in bricks and mortar. Generations have lived, loved, and died here, supporting and strengthening each other. Yet street by street, longtime residents are being forced out. And Loraylee, searching for a way to keep her family together, will form new alliances--and find an unexpected path that may yet lead her home.Binding Type: Paperback

great for teething puppies
Color: Stick
I have puppies that are 6 weeks old and this toy has been great. They like to gnaw on it as their teeth are erupting. I easy to clean, washer and dryer. I have several other teething toys from same company as I liked this one so much. Would purchase again, highly recommend for teething pups.

My English springer spaniels favorite toy!
Color: Stick, Color: Stick
Boomer, my English springer spaniel loves this toy, it is by far his favorite since he was a young puppy. He is three now and although the original toy is still useable it was showing a little wear so I purchased a second one for his third birthday. He was an aggressive chewer when he was younger and I had a great deal of difficulty in finding toys he would not destroy in 30 minutes. I bought the Orka stick to help with teething and it proved to be very durable and became his favorite toy. He loves the new one just as much enthusiasm. boomer doesn't like the rope so I removed it.

Disappointment
Color: Stick
Disappointment, I have bought these for several of my labs as pups in the past, The center material used to be fleece with knots at ends and difficult To pull through the rubber chew . This toy now has like cotton and polyester strings through the toy tied into knots it easily to chews a part with the dogs, sticks in their teeth and makes a mess, Also easily pulls right through out of the rubber chew toy . After less than one day I ended up throwing away this knotted ball of string and I threaded some fleece strips through the toy and made large nots at the ends, it is now holding up quite well To a pretty aggressive puppy chewer. But I pretty much had to make my own toy

Good for adult & puppy.
We have a one year old English Mastiff female & a 3 month old English Mastiff male puppy. They both love this toy. I have to say Pet Stages won me over after my mother gave me a few of their toys. I'm not a fan of bright colors, but the dogs just these things. All the toys seem to be designed & tested to keep them interested. My dogs love trying to pull the ropes out, chewing the blue firm but soft enough tube and playing tug-o-war with it.

One of my puppies favorite toys!
Color: Stick
My very large puppy loves all of toys Petstages makes out of the Orka line. She is what I consider a heavy chewer and the (stick, frisbie, tire) are still in great shape after 5 months. The only issue with this stick, is that the rope pulls out of the stick way to easily. But even with that she continues to carry it around and chew on it.
