Famed 60s sunshine pop band 5th Dimension's LaMonte McLemore's additional enduring legacy is that of a photographer, contributing a weekly column "Beauty of the Week" to the renowned publication of African American pop culture, JET. Here, for the first time, is his personal selection of the column's glory era.

"...Black Is Beautiful: JET Beauties of the Week collects some of the pictures that LaMonte McLemore, a vocalist and a founding member for the psychedelic soul band the 5th Dimension, took for Jet in the forty-plus years he worked for the magazine as a freelance photographer....Though a professional photographer, McLemore knew to make the images look as natural as the beauties he was tasked with shooting...In the age of the smartphone camera, most of us know our good angles. We can blur away our imperfections using an Instagram filter. The raw appeal of Jet's erstwhile models remains unrivalled. Black Is Beautiful captures the quality that made these women most appealing--their confidence that anyone with eyes would want to look at them, au naturel." -- Jennifer Wilson, The New Yorker

As a founding member and vocalist in the award-winning pop-soul group The 5th Dimension, LaMonte McLemore enjoyed enormous critical and commercial acclaim in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But arguably just as impactful, if not more so, was his career as a photographer cementing Black women and models in American media and cultural history.

McLemore freelanced for JET magazine for more than four decades, principally shooting for its "Beauty of the Week" feature, which encapsulated Black joy, style, and beauty. During this time, he photographed over 500 Black women, most of whom were not professional models. The section, in which a woman was featured in a swimsuit along with her name, place of residence, profession, hobbies, and interests, became one of the most popular among the magazine's audiences, as it showcased the everyday beauty and elegance of Black women, contributing greatly to what has been called the "first form of social media" by acclaimed contemporary visual artist, Mickalene Thomas. This photographic output serves as a living document of everyday Black fashion and elegance.

Black Is Beautiful: JET Beauties of the Week compiles, for the first time, numerous photographs from McLemore's "Beauty of the Week" shoots, including never-before-seen outtakes from those sessions. This dynamic coffee table book is a tribute to LaMonte McLemore's talent and cultural impact, and is a celebration of Black women, Black beauty, and Black culture.

About the Author
LaMonte McLemore was a vocalist and one of the founding members of the pop-soul group The 5th Dimension--boasting 20 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 (with "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" reaching number one), nine Grammy nominations, and six wins, including two Records of the Year--known for their versatile sound and diverse appeal that transcended race, age, and nationality. In 1991, McLemore and the original lineup of the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. While touring the world and receiving critical acclaim with the group, McLemore was also a photographer for JET magazine, taking over 30,000 photographs for their "Beauty of the Week" feature. He was also the photographer for Stevie Wonder's first album cover, and the first African American athlete to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals, followed by a short stint playing for the LA Dodgers until an arm injury.

LaMonte McLemore's work with The 5th Dimension and JET magazine left a significant impact on popular culture, one that can still be seen today.

Love this Sweater!
Size: Medium, Color: Black
Had my doubts, but this sweater is great! The color is great, follow the care instructions, and this sweater will not let you down. Feels great, fits great, no shrinkage, and looks excellent. Does it pill? Yes, expect it, but I also bought the BEAUTURAL Fabric Shaver and Lint Remover, Sweater Defuzzer with 2-Speeds. And it works beautifully not only on this sweater when needed, but also on my winter beanies and other clothes, which now look like new. My advice then. Buy the de-piller and buy this Sweater. I have purchased six, and I love these sweaters, especially now that I know how to best care for and keep them like new.

SEXY BLACK TURTLENECK SWEATER!
Size: X-Large, Color: Black
This is soft, looks amazing on my husband who is a big guy (6’2” @245) so not everything fits all the time. Sleeves are long enough, and the sweater looks great on him. Soft material, nice collar rate 10/10. Will try and get a nice pic of him in it!

Nice economy casual sweater,
Size: Large, Color: Off-white
The sweater is fine for the price, with correct fit. Arrived fast. Nice neutral cream/oatmeal color. It has a fairly loose open weave and is predominantly cotton, so it’s quite breathable and well suited for layering in cool but not truly cold weather. The knit is a little coarse, not really scratchy but not very soft. It’s a good value for what they charge. And fine for casual wear. But I ultimately decided to return it and spend a lot more to get a merino wool sweater because they are dressier, much warmer for weight, MUCH softer, and less bulky under a jacket. I like to wear mock turtlenecks under a sport coat in the fall and this sweater was a little too thick for that.

Soft and comfortable but runs a bit large
Size: Medium, Color: Off-white
I got this turtleneck in the off white color, and it looks very clean and easy to style. The color is true to what is shown and works well with casual or more dressed up outfits. The fabric feels soft and has a nice amount of stretch, which makes it comfortable to wear for longer periods without feeling stiff. The sweater feels lightweight but still warm enough for cooler days. It is not heavy or bulky, so it layers easily under jackets or coats. It also seems fairly wrinkle resistant. After wearing it and folding it, it still looked neat without needing much adjustment. In terms of fit, it does run a little big. I usually wear a medium, and while this one is still wearable, it feels slightly looser than expected, especially through the body. It is not a big deal, but I would probably order a smaller size next time for a more fitted look. The turtleneck itself sits comfortably around the neck and does not feel tight or irritating. Overall, it feels like a comfortable and easy to wear piece with good stretch, a nice lightweight feel, and a clean look. Just something to keep in mind on sizing if you prefer a closer fit.

Don’t recommend
Size: Medium, Color: Black
Got this as a last minute shirt for an event and it was roughly $12 on sale. The quality was ok, first wear was fine but it doesn’t hold up after washing and air drying. I don’t recommend unless only wearing once, there was a lot of shedding and pilling after the first wear. I’m rough 5 ft tall and about 140 lbs. and I got a M and it sat around my hips so unless your on the tall side this wouldn’t fit.
