They were then popular again during the Aesthetic Period (after the Queen finally came out of her 20 year mourning for Prince Albert). The Edwardians, inspired by Queen Alexandra, wore crescents with wild abandon, sometimes pinning dozens of brooches to a single bodice. 

Crescent moons in antique jewellery symbolise “new beginnings”. As the moon changes, and when it turns into a full moon, it represents the ebb and flow of life - thus a crescent in the 19th Century was associated with weddings and births (and later, honeymoons). Rubies are the stones of July.
