artist biography
Helge Karl Sixten Holmlund was born March 13, 1911 in Gummark in Västerbotten. He was a Swedish painter, print maker and sculptor.
Holmlund first worked as a blacksmith and welder at Rönnskärsverken, but in 1943 he decided to devote himself entirely to art. He studied at Otte Sköld's painting school in Stockholm in 1947, at the same time he participated in evening courses at Lena Börjeson's sculpture school.
He made his debut in a group exhibition in Skellefteå in 1947. He continued to show in group exhibitions throughout his career including exhibitions around Sweden including ones in Kiruna, Malmberget, Boden, Luleå and Stockholm. Alongside Lennart Hamberg, he exhibited in Skelleftehamn in 1950.He exhibited De Ungas salong in Stockholm in 1952 and at Tekniska gymnasiet in Skel lefteå in 1953.
He undertook numerous public art works including decorative paintings in Ursviken's church and Kalvträsk church, a glass window in Sävenes kapell, some stairwell murals for Svenska riksbyggen, and murals in Nysätra folkskola and Västerbotten's antiquities association building Nordanå in Skellefteå. In 1969 he was awarded a travel scholarship to St Barthélemy in the Caribbean. Holmlund painted still life, portraits , allegorical compositions, and landscapes as well as woodcuts, porcelain painting and smaller terracotta sculptures.
Holmlund passed away in Kåge at the age of 77 on February 15, 1989.
