一百多年前，英國以租借方式從清末中國手中獲得香港大部分的土地（即新界）。到了1992年7月，彭定康以末任英國派任總督的身分前往香港履新，準備在1997年將香港主權移交給中國，而非依循過去數十年英國處理其他殖民地的慣例讓其獨立。接下來五年內，彭定康在其港督任内撰寫這些日記，詳細描述香港作為英國殖民地的運作方式，以及隨著主權移交臨近之日所發生的各種事件。
這本日記對於與北京當局的談判、強化香港（遲來的）的民主制度，以及彭定康如何尋求適度的自治制度讓香港在1997年後能持續運作，提供了前所未有的真知灼見。出乎意料的是，不只中國共產黨反對彭定康的政制改革，一些英國商人和政府高官也對彭定康的作為非常不悅。對這些人來說，與北京保持良好的關係似乎比較重要，香港的政治自由和法治反倒是枝微末節。
本書英文版在香港主權移交25週年之際出版，作者反思過去到現在與北京當局打交道的種種經歷。書末短文〈香港的毀壞〉描述香港自1997年以來的情勢發展，對近年香港所遭受的挫敗做了一番權威性的評估。
作者
彭定康（Chris Patten）
目前擔任牛津大學校監。他的著作包括：《首次告解：某種回憶錄》（First Confession: A Sort of Memoir）、《下一步是什麼？：二十一世紀的生存之道》（What Next? Surviving the Twenty-First Century）、《另類外交官：關於世界事務的逆耳忠言》（Not Quite the Diplomat: Home Truths about World Affairs）、《東方與西方：彭定康治港經驗》（East and West: The Last Governor of Hong Kong on Power, Freedom and the Future）。在擔任代表巴斯（Bath）選區的國會議員時（1979-92），彭定康歷任以下職位：海外發展副大臣、環境大臣和保守黨主席。1992-1997年出任香港總督，1998年《貝爾法斯特協議》（即《耶穌受難日協議》）簽署後擔任北愛爾蘭警政獨立委員會主席，並於1999-2004年擔任歐盟對外關係專員。《觀察家報》曾如此形容彭定康：「要是他當年有機會，肯定能成為保守黨史上最佳首相。」

徐嘉煜（Ruben G. Tsui）
美國天普大學商學院保險精算系畢。臺大翻譯碩士學位學程筆譯組畢業後在該學程擔任兼任講師。專長：翻譯語料庫之建置及應用。研究興趣：自然語言處理及翻譯科技。翻譯實務領域：科技、金融、歷史。
袁曼端
香港城市大學翻譯系畢業，目前於臺大翻譯碩士學位學程筆譯組就讀。喜歡甜食和韓國文化，曾翻譯字幕、雜誌和參與編輯工作，譯有《戰爭憑什麼》（合譯）。
黃瑜安
政大經濟學系畢業，目前於臺大翻譯碩士學位學程筆譯組就讀。熱愛電影、美食和琴酒，從事影視字幕、書籍與各類型文件的翻譯工作，譯有《西方文化的特立獨行如何形成繁榮世界》與《疫苗商戰》。
林庭如（Rye Lin）
目前於臺大翻譯碩士學位學程口譯組就讀，從事英、粵語口筆譯工作剛滿五年，內容多以藝術文化類為主。過去經常拜訪香港，現在比較沒有機會造訪，但很幸運能參與本書的翻譯，藉此探索不曾見證與深究的香港過往。
沈函儀
臺大外文系畢業，目前就讀臺大翻譯碩士學位學程筆譯組。雜食性譯者，跨足本地化及書籍翻譯，享受藉由翻譯探索世界豐富的樣貌，期望以文字為窗，和讀者一同欣賞窗外的風景。

Great Treat

These are very thin and apparently very delicious as all four of my dogs LOVE them!
I have very sensitive dogs that are able to digest this treat with no difficulty. The only thing I have to mention is this: if your dog is small, break the chip in half or quarters to avoid any choking. Great product!
