The Platinum Classic Maki-e Kanazawa Leaf Fountain Pen - The Moon and a Rabbit draws upon one of Japan's most beloved folktales, transforming a centuries-old legend into an elegant writing instrument. Finished in deep black with shimmering gold leaf accents, the pen depicts a rabbit beneath a luminous moon, a scene that has appeared throughout Japanese art, poetry, and seasonal celebrations for generations.

In Japanese folklore, it is said that a rabbit lives on the moon, where it pounds rice with a mortar and pestle to prepare mochi, a traditional rice cake associated with festivals, harvest celebrations, and the changing seasons. The story originated from ancient Buddhist legends and gradually became woven into Japanese cultural identity, making the moon rabbit a symbol of selflessness, perseverance, and quiet contentment. Even today, the image remains one of the most recognizable motifs associated with autumn and the annual moon-viewing tradition known as Tsukimi.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Moon and a Rabbit model is part of Platinum's celebrated Kanazawa Leaf collection, which highlights decorative techniques rooted in one of Japan's most important artistic traditions. Produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, Kanazawa gold leaf has been crafted for more than four centuries and remains renowned for its remarkable delicacy and luminous beauty.

The design combines maki-e inspired decoration with genuine Kanazawa gold leaf, allowing the moon and surrounding elements to appear radiant against the deep black finish. The contrast between the dark lacquer and shimmering metallic accents evokes the tranquility of a moonlit evening, while the rabbit motif introduces an element of warmth and storytelling that gives the pen exceptional character.

The pen's slender profile and understated proportions allow the decorative artwork to remain the focal point. The result is a writing instrument that feels distinctly Japanese in its aesthetic restraint, where symbolism and craftsmanship are allowed to speak softly rather than demand attention.

Writing Experience

The Platinum Classic Maki-e Kanazawa Leaf Fountain Pen - The Moon and a Rabbit is fitted with a smooth 14-karat gold nib that exemplifies Platinum's reputation for precision and control. The nib offers a pleasant balance of smoothness and tactile feedback, delivering an engaging writing experience suitable for both everyday use and reflective journaling sessions.

The lightweight construction sits comfortably in hand, encouraging longer periods of writing without fatigue. Platinum's proprietary Slip & Seal cap mechanism further enhances practicality by helping prevent ink from drying inside the pen, ensuring reliable performance even after extended periods of inactivity.

Brand Heritage

Founded in Tokyo in 1919, Platinum Pen Co. has spent more than a century refining the marriage of technical innovation and traditional Japanese artistry. The company's writing instruments often draw inspiration from cultural motifs and decorative techniques that have shaped Japan's artistic identity for generations.

The Kanazawa Leaf collection beautifully reflects this philosophy by pairing authentic gold leaf craftsmanship with imagery that carries deep cultural meaning. Through The Moon and a Rabbit, Platinum transforms a cherished Japanese folktale into a functional work of art, offering enthusiasts a writing instrument that celebrates storytelling, seasonal tradition, and the enduring beauty of Japanese decorative craftsmanship.

very good
Format: Kindle
Another good addition to this publisher's collection. The book is well organized, flows well and is very readable. The main thing I have like about this series is that they don't just cover the "highlights," although they do a good job on those, but how they cover more of the daily lives of the people. I was surprised at exactly how hard the people's lives were by choice, not just men but woman as well. I can't imagine being drafted into the military at age 5 or 6 and staying there until you were thirty. And eating "black soup" a concoction made of pork, pigs' blood, onions, salt and vinegar. To paraphrase a quote, it's no wonder Spartans were prepared to die when all you eat was this soup! I was also surprised by the freedoms including education and land ownership of the woman of Sparta giving the era.....and the sexual freedom they had was more surprising. There is a lot more information of interest. This is a good book and most will enjoy reading it

An Enthralling Overview of the Proud Spartans
Format: Kindle
This is a very good book. It is well researched and extremely well written. It is easy to read and easy to understand. Although this book is just an overview of the Greek city-state of Sparta, it does very well cover Sparta's unique history. Learn about Sparta's rise in military fame and the battles they fought. Learn how all of Sparta trained to become the healthiest and fittest city-state in Greece. Learn about daily life for all the classes of people in Sparta, even the kings and queens. Learn how Sparta became independent and supplied everything the city-state needed. This book is well worth reading and I highly recommend it. It will be a great book to add to anyone's history shelf.

fair narrative, has good information
Format: Kindle
Sparta is somewhat of a mystery. This book provides the reader with basic historical data, yet it lacks deeper detail. Sparta deserves more
