Bosch 6-volt silver ignition coil, 1.5 ohm primary resistance, epoxy-filled, supplied with factory-style mounting bracket. The correct ignition coil for original 6-volt air-cooled VWs and other vintage European vehicles still running their factory 6V electrical systems. Part #00-9408-B.

Why 6V matters for original-spec VWs

VW Beetles were 6-volt from 1949 through the 1966 model year before VW switched to 12-volt for 1967. Many surviving early Beetles, Buses, Karmann Ghias, and Type 3s remain on their original 6V electrical systems — and most restorers prefer to keep them that way rather than convert to 12V, which alters the car's originality and isn't necessary for normal driving.

Running a 12V coil on a 6V system produces weak spark and unreliable starting. Running a 6V coil on a 12V system burns out the coil and the points in short order. The two are not interchangeable — match the coil voltage to the vehicle's electrical system.

Specifications

Will NOT work for: 12-volt electrical systems (use a 12V coil, such as the Bosch Blue or Beru Blue). 1967 and later VWs were 12V from the factory.

FAQ

Is my car 6V or 12V?
1966 and earlier VWs were 6V from the factory. 1967 and later were 12V. Many early cars have been converted to 12V over the decades — check the battery (a 6V battery is usually marked as such) and the generator (6V generators are physically smaller than 12V alternators).

Why epoxy filled instead of oil filled?
Epoxy-filled coils can be mounted in any orientation — upright, sideways, or upside down — because there's no liquid to migrate. Some original Bosch 6V coils were oil-filled and required upright mounting; this Bosch Silver replaces both styles and is the more flexible choice.

Will this work with Pertronix or electronic ignition?
Pertronix makes 6V versions of some of their Ignitor modules. Check your specific Pertronix unit's specs. A 1.5 ohm coil is on the lower end for stock 6V points ignition and is generally compatible with most 6V electronic ignition modules.

Is the bracket the original factory style?
Yes, the included bracket matches the factory Bosch coil mounting pattern used on air-cooled VWs.

Should I convert to 12V instead?
That's a separate decision. 12V conversion gives you brighter headlights, easier starting, and compatibility with modern accessories — but it requires replacing the generator, regulator, coil, lights, and any 6V accessories. For a daily-driven restoration, 12V conversion is reasonable. For a numbers-correct restoration, keep it 6V.
