Who the Vandoren ZZ Baritone Saxophone Reed is For

The Vandoren ZZ is an ufiled-cut baritone saxophone reed made for players who want fast response with a clear, bright-centered jazz sound. It is well suited to working saxophonists, advancing students, and doublers who need a reed that speaks quickly on soft attacks, supports precise articulation, and remains stable and free-blowing as you push into the upper register.

ZZ reeds use a distinctive relationship between the reed’s heart (where the tone is produced) and the thickness of the tip (which drives vibration), helping the reed respond immediately while maintaining tone quality. This cut combines the medium-thick heart, spine, and rounded tip concept associated with Vandoren V16 with the flexible palette design associated with JAVA, which many players choose for its lively feel and colorful tone.

Common Questions About The Vandoren ZZ Reed

Are Vandoren ZZ reeds good for jazz on baritone saxophone?

Yes. ZZ reeds were developed specifically for jazz and related styles, aiming for immediate response, a precise attack, and the brightness and tone quality players typically want in that repertoire.

What does “unfiled cut” mean on the ZZ Reed?

An unfiled cut reed (also known as an American cut or single-cut) is characterized by a "U" shape at the bottom of the vamp where the bark is left intact. Unfiled reeds are often described as offering a darker, richer tone, better stability, and greater resistance. Unfiled reeds are a great match for bright mouthpieces. They are often favored for jazz or pop, particularly when using moderate-to-bright mouthpieces, as they balance out the sound.

How does the ZZ design help with altissimo?

Vandoren ZZ reeds aid altissimo playing through a design that combines a thick heart (for stability) with a specially designed tip, ensuring quick response and a full-bodied sound in the high register. Their flexible, free-blowing profile allows for immediate, effortless articulation needed for high notes while maintaining rich tonal color.

Like the other one (Vol 1) but different (Vol 2) with more.
Format: Paperback
Volume 2 continues the great color combinations of the 1st Volume, but the combinations are more complex, with more colors. There's even a section of art in the form of paintings, prints, woven work, etc. that you see on one page while on the opposite page is the breakdown of the colorations in bars with no image. What this does is show how the art works, and then how the combinations also work. Also more of the simplified 2 and 3 combinations that I think I prefer as more minimal. Again, these are ranged from light and airy to darkly saturated -and all curiously satisfying and worth study and trying them out. On the computer it's possible to match any tone or hue, so there's a path that only requires finding the right starting color then paying attention to the combination. Not that it's an end-all, but a beginning. Any of those can be shifted or modified with ease but it depends on how they fit a real-time application and not a formula. But the horizons have already been expanded so there's more, and even more.

Great book to help establish a palette for a software, web or art project
Format: Paperback
I love this book for helping me establish a color palette for art projects that I want a Japanese feel to. Also just generally good for getting inspiration for color palettes that just plain look good. I've always, since I can remember from my youth, felt drawn to the Japanese color combinations in kimono. fashion, origami paper and even toys. Maybe it's a consequence of growing up in Hawaii with all the Japanese influences I had -- or, as I suspect, it's just really good color application. This book helps me find the colors I want that go together the way I want. I use the examples in this book with a Color Muse to pick my digital color palette.

Terrific content, soft cover.
Format: Paperback
It is way smaller than expected but it is amazing in content. The only think I do not like is that it has an extremely soft external cover, which worries me on the long run.
