The ConCoPens Traditional Vietnamese Lacquer Fountain Pen - Then is a study in restraint, depth, and quiet craftsmanship. Finished in deep traditional Vietnamese lacquer, the pen presents an almost monochromatic surface at first glance, with subtle charcoal and warm undertones emerging as light moves across the cap and barrel. Rather than relying on shell inlay or dramatic contrast, Then allows the lacquer itself to become the focal point.

This understated approach gives the pen a refined, contemplative presence. The polished black surface has the visual depth associated with layered natural lacquer, creating a finish that feels warmer and more organic than ordinary resin or painted metal. For enthusiasts who appreciate subtlety, Then offers a particularly elegant expression of ConCoPens' Vietnamese lacquer work.

Craftsmanship & Design

Then is handcrafted using traditional Vietnamese lacquer techniques over a natural wood core. Multiple layers of natural lacquer are applied, cured, and polished by hand, gradually building the depth, gloss, and surface warmth that distinguish true lacquer work from conventional production finishes.

The absence of decorative inlay makes the quality of the lacquer especially important. With no ornamentation to distract the eye, the pen depends on proportion, polish, and subtle tonal variation. This gives Then a quiet sophistication that rewards closer inspection without demanding attention.

Because the lacquering and finishing process is completed by hand, each Then fountain pen may show slight individual variation in tone, depth, and surface character. That individuality is part of the appeal of handcrafted lacquer, where the material and the artisan's process shape the final appearance of each piece.

Vietnamese Lacquer vs. Japanese Urushi

One of the most common questions surrounding ConCoPens is how Vietnamese lacquer compares to Japanese Urushi. Both are considered true Asian lacquers derived from natural tree sap and have been used for centuries to create decorative objects of exceptional beauty and durability.

Japanese Urushi is produced from the sap of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, and contains a natural compound called urushiol. Vietnamese lacquer originates from the sap of the Vietnamese lacquer tree, Toxicodendron succedaneum, and is primarily composed of a related compound known as laccol. Although chemically distinct, both lacquers undergo a similarly demanding process of repeated application, controlled curing, and hand polishing to achieve their remarkable depth and luster.

Because the trees belong to the same botanical family, individuals with known sensitivities to urushi should understand that Vietnamese lacquer cannot be considered inherently hypoallergenic. However, once fully cured, both lacquers become extraordinarily durable finishes prized for their resistance and longevity.

Vietnamese lacquer is not a simplified version of Japanese Urushi, nor is it an imitation of it. Rather, it represents its own rich artistic tradition with a particular emphasis on layered color, luminous depth, and decorative techniques such as shell inlay. The affordability of many Vietnamese lacquer pens generally reflects differences in workshop scale, labor economics, and market positioning rather than any reduction in craftsmanship or authenticity.

Writing Experience

Then is designed to function as both an artisan object and a dependable everyday writing instrument. The natural wood construction keeps the pen comfortable in hand, while the polished lacquer surface provides a smooth, warm tactile quality that feels distinct from acrylic or metal-bodied pens.

The pen is fitted with a German-made gold-plated JoWo #6 stainless steel nib, a widely respected nib platform known for consistency, smoothness, and reliability. Available in Fine and Medium widths, the JoWo #6 nib delivers controlled ink flow and dependable performance for journaling, correspondence, and everyday writing. Filling is handled by the included Schmidt piston converter, allowing the use of bottled fountain pen inks with straightforward maintenance.

Brand Heritage

ConCoPens was founded to introduce traditional Vietnamese lacquer artistry to modern fountain pen enthusiasts. By adapting techniques associated with lacquer paintings, decorative objects, and heirloom craftwork, the brand creates writing instruments that preserve Vietnam's artistic heritage while remaining practical tools for daily use.

Then reflects this philosophy in its purest form. Its appeal comes from layered natural lacquer, careful hand finishing, balanced proportions, and dependable German-made writing components rather than overt decoration. It is a refined choice for writers who appreciate subtle craftsmanship and the quiet beauty of traditional lacquer.

A fundamental message for preparing the heart, mind and body
Format: Hardcover
"Preparing your heart for marriage: Devotions for Engaged couples" is a great devotional that should be used by certain couples who follow a certain type of Christian spirituality to help prepare for married life. As the author Gary Thomas stresses, marriage is an entirely different ballgame from dating. No matter how long (or how short) you've been dating your beloved, living with them and learning how their personality works in daily marriage life is the key. These are 30 pre-marriage devotionals that do not require a Biblical reading with them, and have questions for reflections at the end. First, the pluses of this book. The black and white pictures and the layout of the book is just gorgeous. This is a perfect gift for a couple who has just been engaged. The preparation for marriage is realistic. This book deals with myths regarding a perfect marriage are, what communication is and how to continue to learn to love the other person even when times are tough (it's called taking your marital vows seriously). Now, the issues I have with the book. There is a big emphasis on being sexually pure before marriage. A lot of people will like this approach. However, some of the most religious people I know don't believe in this anymore, and feel this is a lesser sin. Some people who might be open to Christianity might be turned off by the heavy handiness of this subject in this work. This is a very Southern Baptist approach to sexuality. When I read about the author's credentials (teacher and writer in residence at the Second Baptist Church in Houston, TX which is one of the largest fundamental churches in Tx) I was not surprised by his approach. While I understand this approach and there are scriptural references to this approach, it may not be appealing to those questioning the validity of Christianity or to those who are interested in exploring becoming a Christian. Overall, this is a good gift. My Husband and I are an old married couple by now, and we enjoyed the book together and read it in one sitting, discussing the questions at the end. I think this can be used by older married couples. (We decided to revisit our courting days and asked some of the questions at the end of each devotional in past tense). I note the author seems to have devotionals for married couples and has written 18 other Christian oriented relationship books as of this writing. This is good for engaged or newly married couples who have a fundamental bent, or who are willing to either skip the sexual purity chapters or discuss the importance of sexuality in their present married/engaged life.
