Легендарний шумерський цар Гільгамеш — герой міфопоетичного епосу, одного з найдавніших літературних творів, на тисячу років старішого від 'Іліади' та 'Одіссеї' Гомера. На дві третини бог і на одну третину людина, він прагнув безсмертя та хотів покращити життя людей.
Про його пригоди, як реальні, так і вигадані, було написано у ІІІ тисячолітті до н. е. клинописом на глиняних табличках. Лише в XIX столітті було знайдено 12 таких табличок, і це стало справжнєю сенсацїєю. Дослідники виявили в Біблії паралелі з 'Епосом', зокрема в описах історії про Адама і Єву, Всесвітнього потопу тощо.
