EFAs are essential for health, however the body cannot synthesize them. The two main EFAs are omega-3 (including alpha-linolenic aid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)) and omega-6 (including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and linoleic acid (LA)). ALA, found in flaxseed oil, can be converted to EPA and DHA but this conversion is not always efficient. Consuming fish oils alongside plant oils ensures a complete and direct source of these omega-3s. Similarly, the conversion of LA to GLA may also be compromised by various factors, resulting in the need for the supplementation of this EFA.
