Tarkus is waarschijnlijk het enige bestaande album dat jazzlegende Dave Brubeck, de Russische componist Sergei Prokofiev, opnametechnicus Eddy Offord, de Argentijnse componist Alberto Ginastera, het Amerikaanse genie Frank Zappa en de Duitse alleskunner Johann Sebastian Bach met elkaar verbindt. Het tweede album van Emerson, Lake & Palmer was tegelijkertijd divers, ambitieus en complex, en bleek fantastisch succesvol en toegankelijk. Het bereikte de eerste plaats in de Britse albumhitlijst en klom in de VS naar de top 10. Het album uit 1971 bracht de Britse groep ook naar de voorgrond van de concertscene en werd direct herkenbaar door de nu iconische albumhoes.
