Saccharomyces boulardii is een gistsoort die in supplementen veel wordt gebruikt. Wat Saccharomyces boulardii is

Saccharomyces boulardii is een gist, en geen bacterie. Het is een ondersoort van Saccharomyces cerevisiae, de gist die ook bij het bakken en brouwen wordt gebruikt. Anders dan veel bacteriele culturen is deze gist bestand tegen maagzuur. Per capsule gaat het om 250mg, wat overeenkomt met 5 miljard kolonievormende eenheden, oftewel CFU, op het moment van productie.

Wat CFU en MOS betekenen

CFU staat voor kolonievormende eenheden, de gangbare maat waarin het aantal levende gistcellen wordt uitgedrukt. Naast de gist bevat dit product MOS, voluit manno-oligosacchariden. Dat zijn van nature voorkomende vezels die uit de celwand van gist worden gewonnen en als aanvulling in de formule zitten.

Maagzuurbestendig en stabiel

De gist zit in een plantaardige capsule die bestand is tegen maagzuur, een zogeheten DRcaps capsule. Saccharomyces boulardii is stabiel op kamertemperatuur, zodat je het product niet in de koelkast hoeft te bewaren. Daardoor is het makkelijk mee te nemen, bijvoorbeeld op reis.

De capsule en wat erin zit

Naast Saccharomyces boulardii en MOS bevat de capsule microkristallijne cellulose, een rijstextract-mengsel en silica. De capsule zelf is gemaakt van hypromellose en bevat geen gelatine, zodat dit product geschikt is voor veganisten. Je neemt een capsule tussen de maaltijden door, met water.
