Het kleine dorpje in Moldavië produceerde uitstekende wijnen want wijnproevers waren onder de indruk van het delicate boeket en de rijke, volle smaak. In 1878 werd een rode wijn van Purcari 1827 op de wereldtentoonstelling in Parijs aangezien voor een echte Franse topwijn. Iedereen was verrast dat deze uitstekende wijn eigenlijk uit een kleine regio uit het onbekende Moldavië kwam. Aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw was het zelfs één van de meest beroemde wijnen van de wereld. Niet voor niets waren legendarische personen zoals Tsaar Nicolaas II en Queen Victoria vaak geziene gasten op het landgoed. Nu is Château Purcari een van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden in Moldavië. Onlangs is Purcari 1827 wijn bekroond tot de beste wijn van Midden- en Oost-Europa.

Purcari 1827 wordt gemaakt in de omringende wijngaarden van het gelijknamige dorpje dat in de zuidoostelijke punt van Moldavië ligt. De wijngaarden liggen op ongeveer 30 kilometer afstand van de Zwarte Zee en vlakbij de Dniester rivier. De grond is daar zwart, hard en leemachtig. De druiven van de Purcari wijnen worden met de hand geplukt en geoogst. 

De druif rara neāgra is beter bekend onder zijn Roemeense synoniem băbească neagră (grootmoeders zwarte). De wijn rijpt zes maanden op Franse eikenhouten barriques. Je proeft rode kersen, granaatappel, peper en specerijen. Maar ook gedroogd fruit, vanille, chocolade en pruim.
