Hij leerde van de beste leraren die zijn vader hem gaf, maar ook dat bracht geen oplossing voor zijn innerlijke onrust. Daarom ging hij op zoek naar wijsheid bij verschillende religieuze leraren en leerde hij mediteren. Uiteindelijk trok hij zich terug in eenzaamheid, vastbesloten een blijvende staat van geluk te vinden.

Op zijn 35e bereikte hij dat doel: hij werd verlicht. Daarna trok hij door het land om zijn inzichten te delen. Hij liet zien hoe het pad naar een diepere rust en blijvend geluk eruitziet en kreeg vele leerlingen.

Toen hij 80 jaar werd, overleed hij en liet een rijke leer na. Deze toont hoe het leven werkt en waarom het haast onmogelijk is om geluk te vinden via gewone pogingen. Hij noemde dit de vier edele waarheden. Tegelijkertijd gaf hij een uitweg aan, het nobele achtvoudige pad, dat uitnodigt tot een bewust en mindful leven.
