Dit kan zowel door mooie vormen in het hout te kerven zoals knopen of mensfiguren, als met subtiele (geometrische) patronen zoals strepen of stippen die in het hout zijn gesneden.

Ze worden gebruikt als een soort katrol om de touwen bij elkaar te houden bij jato, dorsmolens die graan malen. Door de ghurra kan het touw bewegen zonder snel te slijten.
Daarnaast worden ze ook gebruikt als onderdeel van een draagsysteem voor transport over ruige terreinen, waarbij ze houvast bieden.

Tegenwoordig worden de ghurras nog steeds door ambachtsliederen gemaakt, om het traditionele ambacht in leven te houden. Daar zit voor de Nepalese bevolking namelijk veel trots.
