Lea Kliphuis komt in januari met haar tweede album The World Owes Me Nothing. De plaat is een volgende stap in het beginnende oeuvre van de getalenteerde zangeres, gitariste en songschrijfster. Het album van de Nijmeegse is een stuk optimistischer en opgetogener dan de voorganger uit 2010.

De plaat liet echter wel vijf jaar op zich wachten. Na de tour rond het vorige album Can I Come By? kwam er een tijd niets meer uit Lea’s vingers, waarop ze de hulp inschakelde van JP Hoekstra (Krezip, Douwe Bob) en ze ook de uitnodiging van Marien Dorleijn (Moss) aan nam om samen te schrijven. Met al die nummers op zak nam Lea samen met Hoekstra en Dorleijn en de ritmesectie van De Staat (Jop van Summeren en Tim van Delft) de plaat op in een verblijf op het Groningse platteland.

The World Owes Me Nothing is in vergelijking met Can I Come By? een stuk leger. Het geluid is open, “we hebben meer weggelaten dan opgenomen”, aldus Lea. Het geluid is beïnvloed door platen als Raising Sand van Robert Plant en Alison Krauss, maar ook Sea Change van Beck. En wie bekend is met Lea Kliphuis weet dat de invloeden van Lucinda Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Gillian Welch en Ryan Adams ook terug te vinden zijn. En na het prachtige pianonummer Remember Me is op bonusnummer Oh Boy een vrouwenkoor te horen met de stemmen van Ricky Koole, Stevie Ann, Anna de Beus en Fenna van Zwieten.

Lea Kliphuis vertolkt een uniek geluid in de Nederlandse muziek. The World Owes Me Nothing bevestigt die status.
