Elke speler is een doorgewinterde held, op reis door de woestenij, het hoofd biedend aan abnormale weersomstandigheden en vijanden. Een land vol avonturen, dramatische keuzes en gestoorde personages.

Waste Knights: Second Edition is een avonturenspel. De Avonturen zijn de kern van het spel. Sommige speel je coöperatief, andere tegen elkaar. Elk Avontuur vertakt in een aantal verhalen afhankelijk van de keuzes die de spelers maken. Elk verhaal biedt unieke mechanics en verhaallijnen die je kan vinden in het Book of Tales: sommige hangen vast aan een bepaald avontuur, andere zijn generiek – maar stuk voor stuk geven ze de spelers de kans om zich volledig in te leven in de wereld en de invloed van hun beslissingen.

Elke speler krijgt 2 acties per beurt, waarmee ze kunnen bewegen, grondstoffen kunnen zoeken, kunnen kamperen om zichzelf of hun Gear te herstellen, enzovoort. Daarnaast heeft elk avontuur nog unieke Plot Actions waarmee de spelers het verhaal kunnen beïnvloeden en hun doelstellingen behalen.
