Cortenstaal is een metaallegering bestaande uit ijzer, waaraan koper, fosfor, silicium, nikkel en chroom zijn toegevoegd. Bij blootstelling aan de buitenlucht wordt het materiaal bedekt met een beschermende roestlaag. Deze natuurlijke roestlaag vormt de bescherming tegen verdere corrosie.
