De Nintendo 3DS is gegroeid en niet zomaar gegroeid, de Nintendo 3DS XL heeft een maar liefst 90% groter scherm gekregen. Het hoofdscherm van de 3DS XL is 4,88" groot en het onderste touchscreen meet 4,18". Ondanks dat het scherm 90% groter is, hoef je niet in te leveren op de speelduur. De batterijduur van de Nintendo 3DS XL is t.o.v. de originele Nintendo 3DS sterk verbeterd. Je kunt hier wel 3,5 tot 6,5 uur 3DS games mee spelen en 6 tot 10 uur DS spellen.

Met de 3DS speel je de nieuwste games in 3D, bekijk je 3D video's en maak je foto's in 3D. Het bovenste scherm kan naast 2D beelden ook 3D beelden tonen.

Verder bevat de Nintendo 3DS een motionsensor en Gyrosensor om bewegingen tijdens het gamen te detecteren. Ook is wi-fi aanwezig zodat je online kunt gamen, over het web kunt browsen en youtube video's kunt bekijken. Naast de speciale 3DS spellen kan de Nintendo 3DS ook de spellen van de Nintendo DS en DSi afspelen.

Het systeem wordt geleverd inclusief een 4 GB SD-kaart, waar je diverse content op kunnen bewaren, zoals downloadbare spellen en video's uit de Nintendo eShop.

Het kijken naar 3D-beelden is mogelijk schadelijk voor de ontwikkeling van de ogen van kinderen tot 6 jaar.
