WOOLF, Leonard. Stories of the East. Richmond: Printed and Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press. 1921.

8vo. Card covers printed with a woodcut design in red featuring a tiger surrounded by palm trees, flowers and pineapples; pp. [iv], 5-55, [1]; wrappers browned, with chips to spine ends and lower corner of upper cover; creased along edges and spine; water tide mark to lower cover; rust mark to ffep affecting the upper corner of the first few pages; a very good copy, regardless, of a scarce work.

First edition, sole impression of a purported print run of just 300 copies, with a cover artwork by Dora Carrington, an artist closely associated with the Bloomsbury group and a close friend of Lytton Strachey.

Published in April 1921 and handprinted by Leonard and Virginia Woolf, Stories of the East was one of six books published by Hogarth in 1925, and ultimately its most successful. Leonard’s stories outsold all but Gorky’s second book, The Notebooks of Tchekhov and Virginia’s Monday or Tuesday, and in the scale of press operations it was perhaps its most successful venture.

In March 1915, Leonard and Virginia Woolf had moved to Hogarth House, Richmond, and were experiencing a particularly turbulent time in their lives. Virginia's first novel, The Voyage Out was published that same year, and in an attempt to find an activity to occupy themselves with, Leonard suggested they purchase a book press. Along with some old typeface and some necessary implements and materials, they set about the task with enthusiasm, and their first work, a collection of two short stories by Virginia, was printed in July 1917. All in all, sixteen of the thirty-two books which were published during the years that the press was in Richmond (1917 to 1924) were printed by the Woolfs’ own hand.

A collection of three short stories, ‘Pearls and Swine’, ‘A Tale Told by Midnight’, and ‘The Two Brahmans’, each story painting a picture of Leonard Woolf's fear and mistrust of colonialism, as well as the uncomfortable moral ground occupied by the servants of the British Government in Ceylon prior to the Great War.

Surprisingly good
Size: Gravity, Color: Deep Space Grey
I bought a very old Lexus as a second backup car and as such, it doesn't have any of the amenities we are used to. This phone holder is surprisingly smartly designed. Every time I put my phone in it I'm impressed that it holds it in place.

Outstanding! 5 Stars for Mobility, Durability, Functionality and Ease of Use.
This little invention is outstanding! It holds phones of multiple sizes very securely in place without any bonding or sticky attachments that could damage your vehicle. Mobility is simple as it's easy to add and remove to any vehicle with air condition vents. Best of all, various size devices can be easily held in place with a quick squeeze of the side mounts and just as easily removable with a single press of a release button on the back side. The mount is also very strong and holds up to various temperatures. For example, in the summer it can become very hot in an enclosed vehicle and this mount holds up when other mounts tend to fail from over exposure to heat. The failure causes the joints or fittings to loosen, which will cause your device to slip from an intended position. Well, that is not a problem with this one. It has stood the test of time as I have used this mount for over a year in extreme environments. In the end, it appears that my family has come to like this product too. Ahem, my wife just took mine! So, I have returned to purchase another one for myself and two more for my daughters. Then I don't have to worry about my daughters taking mine either. Yes, I'm finally thinking ahead, so maybe you should think ahead and get additional copies for your family members. Either way, try one and you'll likely be back for more. It makes a great gift. I highly suggest this product to everyone who needs a mobile device mount for their vehicle.
