Uncommon first edition, signed by the artist on the title-page. This is the celebrated photographer's homage to the English seaside, its seediness and poetry. "She liked the decay of some of the aspects of the seaside towns, and the grittiness of it all. She set up her tripod with her film cameras (yes she still shoots film) and just waited for the people to arrive in front of her lens. The photos all tell an individual story, from the young scalleywags on the beach, to a mother and daughter and a couple in a clinch on the beach, oblivious to the photographer. She’s asked if she always shoots with film and remarks that even though she owns one, she’s not that great with digital cameras. She visited a number of places to create these magnificent images, amongst them Filey, Whitby, Brighton and Blackpool" (review of the exhibition of the original photos in The Gallery, Stanhope Street, Liverpool, online).
USA-born, Sheila has lived in London since 1970. Her photographic career took off in 1980 with THE FACE magazine. Sheila exhibits regularly in London and internationally. Her portrait work includes a wide range of entertainment and music glitterati, and her editorial work appears in publications from Vogue to The Sunday Times. Her work can also be found in the permanent collection of London’s National Portrait Gallery. She is currently working on a number of fine art projects.
