Prefacing the ambient music which Brian Eno would pursue later on, ‘Before And After Science’ pulled off the feat of uniting pro-and anti-punks in 1977.

For record buyers, 1977 felt long and momentous. If you were on the “pro” side of the punk debate, the initial euphoria had been somewhat tempered by tabloid and/or physical abuse, and mixed feelings over Sex Pistols’ crossing into the mainstream with a performance on Top Of The Pops. Meanwhile, those on the “anti” side of the fence were bemused and outraged to find their favorite well-established artists dismissed as irrelevant dinosaurs – often, surprisingly, with little significant impact upon their long-term popularity. Either way, a palpable exhaustion had set in by the year’s end, which is where Brian Eno’s Before And After Science came in.

Whether they acknowledged it or not, punks and reactionaries alike needed a respite from the tumult. Brian Eno’s fourth solo album, originally released on the Polydor imprint in December 1977, surreptitiously pulled off the not-inconsiderable feat of uniting both factions as an almost incidental by-product of its casual otherness.

For punks, Eno carried a certain cachet as the outrageous rebel who generated blizzards of pointy noise with the early Roxy Music, while the top-tier musicianship of album guests the likes of Phil Collins and Percy Jones (at that point the seamless rhythm section of jazz-rockers Brand X) ensured that Before And After Science boasted a proficiency attractive to those who still sent in their nominations for the “best instrumentalist” polls in Melody Maker.

Side One of the original vinyl release – subtitled Fourteen Pictures, with reference to the album’s ten songs, plus the four subtle prints by artist Peter Schmidt which came with initial pressings – features a clutch of enigmatic but generally uptempo compositions. “No One Receiving” draws upon the numbed, swaying, and disconnected avant-funk (“Nobody sees us alone out here among the stars”) that characterized side one of David Bowie’s Low, which had been released in January 1977, with Eno as one of Bowie’s key collaborators. “Backwater,” amiable and remorselessly catchy, boasts a scuttling drum pattern by Jaki Liebezeit of Can, and could so easily have been a hit single had anyone thought to release it as such. (Oddly, it eventually surfaced as a single in 1986, nine years later.)

“Kurt’s Rejoinder” features a sample of avant-garde artist/poet Kurt Schwitters reciting his surrealist tract “Ursonate,” and finds Eno offhandedly assuming the role of dance caller: “Do the do-si-do, do the mirror man, do the Boston crab, and the allemande.” “Energy Fools The Magician,” a spacious instrumental in tense suspension, is underscored by Percy Jones’ flurry of pinging bass harmonics, while “King’s Lead Hat” – an anagram of Talking Heads, with whom Eno was in thrall at the time – is a pleasingly raucous word salad that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on his 1974 debut album, Here Come The Warm Jets (“The killer cycles, the killer hertz, the passage of my life is measured out in shirts”).

As for the subdued, meditative fare on Side Two, there could be no finer preface to the ambient experiments which Eno would pursue in succeeding years. Taken together, the five tracks constitute a consoling, weightless, “ocean music” suite (to paraphrase Eno himself). “The radio is silent; so are we,” Eno observes on the gorgeous reverie “Julie With…,” while Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of Cluster add the gentlest gravitas to “By This River” (“You talk to me as if from a distance”).

Topped and tailed by “Here He Comes” and “Spider And I,” Side Two of Before And After Science utilizes what, for Eno, are quite conventional, linear melodies. But in their understatement, a wellspring of implied emotion broils beneath the still surface.

Durable, Flavorful, Chew Toy
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
This bacon flavored scorpion shaped dog toy has been a huge hit with my Labrador. The material feels extremely durable and appears to be made from a hard nylon that can stand up to serious chewing. At first, I was skeptical about the bacon scent because I couldn’t smell anything when I opened the package. The moment my dog started chewing on it, though, the bacon scent became much more noticeable. Anyone else who doesn’t smell it immediately shouldn’t worry because it definitely seems to activate once the toy gets some use. My dog is an enthusiastic chewer and has not been able to destroy this toy. Even better, I haven’t seen any meaningful signs of wear, gouging, or damage despite repeated chewing sessions. That level of durability is exactly what I was hoping for. The design also includes areas where treats can be added for extra enrichment, which adds even more value. Most importantly, it has seemed very safe during use, and I haven’t had to worry about pieces breaking off. Overall, this toy has been durable, engaging, and well worth it. My dog loves it, and I love having a chew toy that can actually survive more than a few days.

Built Tough Enough to Handle Serious Chewers
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
This toy is noticeably harder and denser than standard dog chew toys, which is the whole point. My dog went after it immediately and the nylon held up through serious chewing sessions without gouging, cracking, or pieces breaking off. For a dog that destroys softer toys in minutes, this actually lasts. Based on a few weeks of use I would expect it to hold up for a month or longer depending on the dog, which is significantly better than most toys in this price range. The peanut butter groove is the engagement feature that makes a difference. Stuffing it with peanut butter or other spreadable treats keeps a dog interested longer than just chewing on it plain. The scorpion shape (though it resembles a lobster to some eyes) gives multiple parts to chew on, so the dog can rotate between the legs and tail when one section gets boring. That variety helps extend how long the toy stays interesting. Cleanup is straightforward since it is dishwasher safe, which matters after using peanut butter or other treats in the groove. The teeth cleaning claim is harder to verify in short-term use, but as a durable boredom relief toy for aggressive chewers this performs solidly. It is the kind of toy that actually justifies the price because it does not end up in the trash after a week.

Crawfish that cleans her teeth and tastes like bacon, enough said.
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion, Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
This chew toy is for a medium to large-sized dog and smells like bacon, and who doesn't love bacon? The toy has a heavy-duty safe for dogs nylon core, making it virtually indestructible for aggressive, all-day chewers like my dog. I am from Louisiana, and I love all things crawfish. I thought if she didn't like it, then I could use it to decorate for crawfish parties, but she loves this toy. There is a groove for treats like peanut butter or cheese, whatever your dog is into. My dog likes carrying it around, but I don't think she understands to chew on it yet. However, she must love the bacon taste in her mouth because she hardly takes it out. I wanted her to chew on it to help clean her teeth; maybe in time, she will start. This toy is dishwasher safe after rinsing it off with soapy warm water. Just place it on the top rack and turn it on. The crawfish is smooth and non-porous, so there are no spots for bacteria to hide. I really like this crawfish, and I hope that in time my little weirdo will understand that it is meant to be chewed, not sucked on. I highly recommend this for larger dogs that love to chew, and I am happy with this order.

Our dogs wouldn’t touch this chew toy
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion, Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
I ordered this Bacon Flavored Nylon Chew Toy for my boxer mix dog. She sniffed it and wouldn’t have anything to do with it. We waited a day and still no luck. We figured that we would give it to our pit bull because she can annihilate a chew toy. Nope, she wouldn’t touch it. The thing looks like a big chunk of plastic with a very faint smell of bacon. Based on our experience with this product I cannot recommend it.

Surprisingly Tough Chew Toy for Aggressive Chewers
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion, Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
This chew toy is made from a very hard nylon style material and feels substantially tougher than the average dog toy. It definitely seems geared toward aggressive chewers and larger dogs that destroy softer toys quickly. Our pup immediately liked it, especially with the peanut butter groove feature, which helped keep them interested longer. The toy feels almost indestructible during normal chewing sessions and has held up very well so far with no major gouges, cracks, or chunks coming off. Based on first impressions, I would expect this to last at least a month or more for many dogs, which is far better than a lot of chew toys in this price range. Another nice bonus is that it is dishwasher safe, making cleanup easy after using peanut butter or other treats in the groove. As for the teeth cleaning claim, I honestly cannot comment much on that yet. I have not personally noticed any obvious difference in our dog’s teeth or dental condition from using it. Still, as a durable boredom relief chew toy for aggressive chewers, it has been a solid performer so far and seems like a good value.
