WHAT’S BREWING THIS MONTH?

This month, we're showcasing Purple Rain, a washed coffee from Dipilto, Nicaragua.

Our Coffee of the Month series gives us the opportunity to shine a light on a specific grower or community as we explore amazingly diverse coffees from all around the world. If you're someone who thinks variety is the spice of life, this one's for you.

Expect a vibrant and expressive cup with layered notes of stone fruits, sugarcane and rose petals.

MORE ABOUT THE COFFEE

This month's coffee comes from Finca San Ramon, located within the Dipilto mountain range in Nicaragua, a nature reserve close to the Honduras border.

The farm is owned by Donald Efrain Roque, a third-generation coffee producer whose family has been dedicated to coffee for generations. Following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, Donald has spent his entire life working with coffee and has developed a deep affection and passion for it.

In 2006, Donald learned about the Cup of Excellence in Nicaragua and decided to enter the competition to better understand the potential of his coffee. After performing well, he became even more motivated to improve quality and returned to compete again in 2009 and 2011, achieving great results.

For Donald, one of the biggest transitions from conventional coffee farming to specialty coffee production was training and educating workers to adapt harvesting and processing practices to meet higher quality standards.

A COMMITMENT TO QUALITY

Donald has been working with our import partners, Caravela, for five years. Since beginning his journey in specialty coffee, his perspective on coffee production has changed completely.

He is constantly seeking ways to improve and become a better farmer, and strongly believes in the potential of specialty coffee in Dipilto, Nueva Segovia. He encourages other producers in the region to focus on producing high-quality coffee and continuing to raise standards throughout the community.

THE FLAVOUR PROFILE

This lovely washed Nicaraguan coffee delivers vibrant fruit character from the very first sip.

Expect notes of plums, prunes and nectarines as the coffee opens up in the cup. As you continue drinking, a sugarcane-like sweetness develops, before finishing with delicate notes of white rose petals.

Hearing about all these purple notes really makes you just want to sing that legendary song!
