The Japanese art of sashiko is a joyful and practical approach to decorative repair. Rooted in a rich history, this hand-sewing technique uses simple, rhythmic stitches that anyone can learn, regardless of experience. This book includes both beginner-friendly and more intricate patterns, making it suitable for those new to sashiko as well as experienced stitchers.
Traditionally used to repair and embellish clothing, bedding, and household textiles, sashiko offers a functional and beautiful way to extend the life of well-worn fabrics. In Mending with Sashiko, you’ll learn a range of techniques, including hitomezashi, moyozashi, and koginsashi, and discover which methods work best for different materials. Clear instructions guide you through repairing everyday garments such as jeans, shirts, and socks, as well as applying sashiko to larger projects like patchwork quilts.
Artist and sashiko practitioner Takao ‘Momi’ Momiyama invites you into his workshop to share his knowledge, techniques, and personal approach. Through examples from his archive—garments carefully mended and re-mended over decades—you’ll see how sashiko transforms clothing through continual use and repair. Both practical and expressive, sashiko encourages a slower, more thoughtful relationship with textiles, turning everyday garments into lasting, meaningful pieces.
