Phoney Wars looks at the lives of New Zealanders during the greatest armed struggle the world has ever seen: the Second World War. It is not a political, economic or military history; rather it explores what life was like during the war years for ordinary people living under the New Zealand flag. It questions the war as a story of ‘good’ against ‘bad’. All readers know that the Axis powers behaved ruthlessly, but how many are aware of the brutality of the Allied powers in bombing and starving ‘enemy’ towns and cities? New Zealand colluded in and even carried out such brutal aggressions. Were we, in going to war, really on the side of the angels? Contrary to the propaganda of the time – and subsequent memory – going to war did not unite New Zealanders: it divided them, often bitterly. People disagreed over whether or not we should fight, what we were fighting for and why, who was fighting, who was paying, and who was dying. In this provocative and moving book, Stevan and Hugh Eldred-Grigg explore New Zealanders’ hopes and fears, beliefs and superstitions, shortages and affluence, rationing and greed, hysteria and humour, violence and kindness, malevolence and generosity, to argue that New Zealand need not have involved itself in the war at all.

The perfect desk chair for sitting cross-legged—plus it rolls!
Color: Leather-beige, Size: Luxurious(With Wheels), Color: Leather-beige, Size: Luxurious(With Wheels)
This chair is absolutely amazing if you like to sit cross-legged while working. The seat is incredibly wide, giving you plenty of room to get comfortable without feeling cramped against the armrests. The smooth faux leather is awesome. I am honestly impressed with the price vs quality. The padding is nice for my 13 yr old daughter to sit cross legged on. The cushion is thick and supportive, and it has held its shape really well without flattening out. I also love that this specific model has wheels—a lot of these wide cross-legged chairs come with flat bases, so having the mobility to roll around my desk space is a huge plus. It looks high-end, feels sturdy, and was very straightforward to assemble. 10/10 recommend!

Great value and chair!
Color: Fabric-grey, Size: Luxurious(With Wheels)
Great chair and value! I got this to use with my work desk. It’s not super padded and I don’t know how long it will last, but it’s comfortable and the height is adjustable. It feels solid and my teenager was able to put it together with the instructions. It looks nicer with my desk than I thought it would. The fact I can sit “cross cross apple sauce” was the most important feature!

Comfortable, Stylish, and So Easy to Assemble!
Color: Leather-beige, Size: Luxurious(With Wheels)
I recently purchased this chair and honestly, I’m very impressed! It took me longer to unpack everything than it did to actually assemble it. The setup was quick, simple, and the video instructions on YouTube made it even easier. The chair is super comfortable, rolls smoothly, and fits perfectly underneath my vanity without taking up too much space. I know it’s marketed as a “cross-legged” chair for younger users, but at 57 years old, sitting cross-legged isn’t exactly happening for me anymore 😂 — and I still absolutely love it. It’s stylish, comfortable, sturdy, and perfect for everyday use. I would definitely buy this chair again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cute and functional vanity or office chair!
