Even experienced writers can make mistakes when crafting their YA (young adult) short stories and novels. These gaffes are specific to the category of literature for teenagers, from inserting too much introspection and “adult" insight to chasing the latest trends. The good news: learning to identify and fix these mistakes will strengthen your writing overall. In this tutorial, you'll discover the 7 biggest mistakes in YA fiction and 28 ways to fix these mistakes!

This tutorial is taught by Kerri Majors. Kerri is the founder and editor of YARN (Young Adult Review Network), the first and leading independent online literary journal of YA literature. YARN publishes short fiction, essays, and poetry by established and emerging YA writers, including teens, as well as an editors' blog, interviews, and lesson plans for teachers. Kerri is also a writer with an MFA from Columbia University. She has published short works in several journals, including Guernica and Poets and Writers. She is the author of This Is Not a Writing Manual: Notes for the Young Writer in the Real World (Writer's Digest Books, July 2013).

This 38-minute tutorial will strengthen your writing by teaching you how to:

  • Avoid clich√©s like ‚Äòthe friendless teen' and instead, craft unique teen and parent characters that add texture to your narrative
  • Create an authentically teen world
  • Use action (rather than introspection) to move your story forward
  • Explore realistic, complex drama versus putting forth a moral message
  • Embrace your personal voice, and avoid the urge to chase trends
  • Dig deep in order to solve narrative problems with character (instead of plot solutions)
  • Bring your story to a satisfying end

This tutorial will provide you with craft- and process-focused tools . . . improve your YA fiction and make it stand out in this competitive marketplace!

Nice cozy sweater, but handwashing is recommended
Color: Beige, Size: Medium
Soft and cozy, but does not wash well. Goes with everything. This sweater fits well and looks great. I received lots of compliments while wearing it.

Great sweater for winters in the Midwest
Color: Black, Size: X-Large
Love this sweater! I went back and got another color! The fit is true to size and very comfy. The button detail on the sleeves just adds a little pizazz. The weight of the sweater is perfect for winters in the Midwest.

Flattering fit
Color: Dark Green, Size: XX-Large
This sweater is thick and stretchy but holds a nice shape, and is flattering on the body. The sleeves are nice and long too, which I really appreciate, being a tall person... the button detail is a great addition. True to size. I haven't washed it yet, and I imagine, based on the kind of woolly knit it is, that this sweater will eventually pill... but for now I'm enjoying being cozy and stylish. The deep green color is almost black green. I LOVE IT.

Love it
Color: Dark Green, Size: Small
I got the dark green. Love the sweater and it's warm. I do layer the sweater as well. It is as pictured. Size is perfect to me. I like sweaters to be longer and a bit wider in case it is freezing and I need to layer it. This sweater is perfect for layering. It comes closer to my backside, it is a little wide and not snug, and I like that the sleeves come over my wrists

Still soft but looks terrible after 1 wash. Save your money
Color: White, Size: Small, Color: White, Size: Small
Update: sweater looked great when I received. After 1 wash it looks terrible. Looks like it’s been washed too many times, material fuzzy and piled. After wearing it once, it snagged and the knit pulled through. I would NOT recommend. I had such high hopes. Save your money. Very nice sweater, especially for the price! I love the details of the buttons on the sleeves. It is SO soft. It’s not super thick as I can see my skin through it when pressing my hand up against fabric. However, it’s not see through when wearing it. It’ll be perfect in cooler weather and perfect in the winter with a coat but won’t cause me to overheat when in a heated environment. I do feel like it runs big. I could have sized down a size. Although I’m not sure if it’ll shrink after a wash or two.
