One of The Bookshelf's Best Books of 2019

'A rare gem. This is biography at its best: boldly conceived and brilliantly written. In spare, haunting prose Cathy Perkins rescues Zora Cross from oblivion, re-establishing her as one of Australia's most remarkable literary figures. We see Zora's life through the stories of her relationships with others. The person that emerge —possessed by an irrepressible hunger to write and to be published—is impossible to pin down. In Perkins's hands, Zora Cross dances vividly before our eyes.'— Mark McKenna

Australian poet and journalist Zora Cross caused a sensation in 1917 with her bookSongs of Love and Life. Here was a young woman who looked like a Sunday school teacher, celebrating sexual passion in a provocative series of sonnets. She was hailed as a genius, and many expected her to endure as a household name alongside Shakespeare and Rossetti. While Cross's fame didn't last, she kept writing through financial hardship, personal tragedies and two world wars, producing an impressivebody of work. Her verse, prose and correspondence with the likes of Ethel Turner, George Robertson (of Angus & Robertson) and Mary Gilmore place Zora Cross among the key personalities of Australia's literary world in the early twentieth century. The Shelf Life of Zora Crossreveals the life of a neglected writer and intriguing person.

Classic design and good sturdy quality

Let's just address the elephant in the room. My family says I am cheap, but I call it thrifty. Either way, I bought a couple of cork screws earlier that left like they would break at any moment when pushing down the arms, and after a few bottles, one arm did bend. So this time, i paid attention to the reviews and chose these cork screws as the review said they are solid quality. The review was correct. This design is pretty fool proof and easy for anyone to use. You do not need super human strength to pull the cork. Just remove the foil, screw the sharp coil into the cork until the arms have reached the top of their range, the place the bottle on a hard surface and push both arms down. Easy peasy. The bad openers I mentioned earlier did not have anything on the opener arms and the metal was thin. It did not provide a good feel. These cork screws have thicker arms and have a rubber grip on them which provides a much more comfortable operation. I would definitely recommend these cork screws for quality and value.

Good wine opener, not great
Color: Silver, Number of Items: 1
Definitely doesn’t feel as robust as other openers I’ve used. Takes a bit for the teeth to catch and you have to ensure it’s all the way in before pulling the cork out. Still gets the job done though

great addition to your wine collection

The wine opener works just fine. I had one like this before but it was difficult to get the cork out. This one is much easier and it also looks good as well. The handles add a nice touch.

I had had it with cheaply functioning wine bottle openers!
Color: Silver, Number of Items: 1
I like a manually functioning wine bottle opener. This one is smooth and easy to use and I didn't feel like I would cut my finger when removing the cork from the opener. Would definitely recommend!
