The album was primarily recorded in Perth, Australia, and Paris, France. Building on the psychedelic sound of its predecessor, Lonerism features fewer guitars and incorporates more synthesizers and samples. Parker infused his pop music influences into the album, aiming for catchier melodies. Ambient sounds, captured by Parker using a dictaphone, are also prominent throughout. The theme of isolation is visually represented on the album cover, which depicts a fenced-off Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris.
