Salvador Dalí's love of dance continually inspired him and was often reflected in his work.
He was particularly attracted to the passion and flamboyance of the Flamenco which explores the full range of human emotions. An avid admirer of the Flamenco queen of Spain - "La Chana", he often watched transfixed while she performed. This playful sculpture, titled Dalinian Dancer, displays many elements reminiscent of Flamenco.
The dancer's perfectly coiffed head, hair pulled tightly into a low, sleek bun, the flirty neckline and floating ruffles of her swirling dress complete the signature look. Dalí's dancer twirls gracefully in a display of vitality and ecstasy, the layers of her skirt gently flaring in waves as she moves rhythmically.
In stark contrast to the delicate fabric and gentle motions, the heaviness of the bronze offers a foundation for the lightness of the elegant dancer. The lacy ruffles of her flowing gown stand out against the matte, fabric hugging her curvy form. The mysterious, faceless figure lures us into the dancer's intimate circle where her tapping heels mirror the beat of her racing heart.
