Ein genetischer Defekt in den Genen des Immunsystems erhöht die Anfälligkeit für MAC-Infektionen. Eine MAC-Infektion bei Zwergschnauzern ist eine fortschreitende, schwere Erkrankung, die die Lebensqualität beeinträchtigt. Infizierte Hunde sterben normalerweise oder werden innerhalb eines Jahres nach der Diagnose euthanasiert.

Die häufigsten klinischen Anzeichen von MAC-Infektionen sind Lymphadenopathie, gefolgt von Anorexie, Lethargie, Durchfall, Fieber, Hämatochezie, Hepatosplenomegalie, abdominalen Masssen, Lahmheit und Synkope.
